Re: D-link versus Linksys.
I have used the D-link, Belkin, SMC and Linksys routers of the four I found the Linksys to be idiot proof and easy to set-up without making any changes, just load the software connect the router when told and your away. The down side it only comes with a yearâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s guarantee while the SMC and Belkin come with a lifetime guarantee. But from what I have heard the Linksys are better made and hardly go wrong. The D-link router I took it back to the shop as it kept dropping the connection and was down to a faulty batch. The router I use is the Linksys BEFSR81 that has 8 ports with simple management via your browser and like I said its idiot proof, thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s why I use it. The BEFSR41 4 port version should meet your needs as NTL have now moved the goal posts and only allow 3 computers to be connected at one time.

Re: D-link versus Linksys.
I have a D-Link 614+ router, plus appropriate PCI cards for 3 PCs. The kids & I can all be on-line at the same time and it's a piece of cake to set up.
I had BIG problems for a while, cannot say enough in praise of D-Link support, who were very good. In the end, the answer was obtained from a genius on this website, but basically the PC was logging on to a 127.x.x.x IP address instead of a 192.168.x.x IP address. D-Link support were excellent, took the router and PCI card back for checking. The support phone number is a London one, not a premium rate one, which is also a nice touch. (BTW, The cure is a single entry in the registry inside Windws XP Home)
Hope this helps

Re: D-link versus Linksys.
I've got a D-Link switch, a good quality bit of kit.
My router (Zyxel) is not very good though, it struggles with some stuff.

I am really going off Zyxel - I get too many calls from people with their modem/router combos which don't appear to have a stable dhcp server on them.

Re: D-link versus Linksys.
Wouldn't know about that, I have a static IP on the net side and for the LAN but they have a nasty habit of dropping DNS requests etc when I'm using one computer for browsing but downloading using another.

I use the WRT54G and since switched on and a suitable home found for it. Strangely it did not like being beween two metal filing cabinets on top of a metal PC case, the range in that location was about 1ft. 5m CAT5 cables allowed a move to the top shelf (ooher), it just sits there blinking away and doing its job.
Set up was breeze ( StuartBe's how to's on here and the how to's on Linksys site are a great help) and being as I have forgotton the password (no user ID) I have not needed to log back in and do anything to it. Though I will in a few weeks when my Apple AirPort arrives so I can connect my HiFi to the WLAN.

Good luck with that - I have the WRT54G sat netxt to the main PC upstairs, and it has been rock solid since day 1...
