Question Router advice needed!

Can anyone advise if this set up will work;

NTL cable modem linked to Linksys BEFW11S4 router. PC ethernet linked to router....then PS2 ethernet linked to router. When I turn on the PS2 will it automatically pick up an IP address from the router? The wireless feature only costs another ten quid over normal router so may as well have it.
I just need a quick simple set up to share BB for PC and PS2. If I go for the above and it does not work the wife will make me sleep on the couch!
Any ideas gratefully welcome. Thanks.

Re: Router advice needed!

says configurable for dhcp on the specs so you shouldn't have any probs with the ps2 ip but i dont use consoles so...
only problem i can see you having(but not really a problem) is the initial setup when you have to clone the mac addy but with a pc in the mix it should pose no real hassles. lots of peeps in here use linksys stuff so they may know about specific issues with consoles
good luck

Re: Router advice needed!

yep you shouldnt have any problems with that!
I have used one of them with my xbox (wirelessly as well).
but have a look at this one as well http://www.buffalo-technology.com/we...s/wbr2-g54.htm
might work out a bit cheaper.
The buffalo one is either simple plug and play or if you want you can pop in the setup and set all kinds of things like intrusion detection and NAT etc.
And incase you want to go compleatly wireless I use my xbox with one of these http://www.buffalo-technology.com/we...li-tx1-g54.htm and i have never had a single problem with that lot!!

If you have any probs setting it up give me a shout!!

Cheers

Re: Router advice needed!

Yes, the BEFW11S4 will work fine with a PS2. Just use the PS2's network setup disk and tell it to get all its setting automatically (DHCP). I've not used the disk in a while, but I think if you just leave all the settings on their default then you'll be configuring what you need (all automatic settings).

At one point I had one PS2 directly connected to the router, and another connected via cable to an iBook which was sharing its wireless connection to the router with the PS2. My ex-housemate and I were trialling PS2 network games (we work for SCEE)

Re: Router advice needed!

I have just seen the NTL/Linksys web site it's nice to see that the web site is in frames. I had a look to see about a firmware upgrade for my Linksys BEFSR81 router.

They do have a firmware up-grade Firmware Date : 5/19/2004 the one it came shipped with is 2.44.2, Dec 13 2002 To upgrade or not to upgrade as its not broke!! but it reports it fixes:
1. Added Multicast IGMP Proxy function
2. Added Filter Internet NAT Redirection option to disable local LAN users from accessing port forwarded services in the router
3. Added CGI string attacks prevention
4. Fixed UPnP issue with Windows XP SP2
5. Fixed BOOTP response to DHCP server
6. Modified DHCP server to fill the siaddr to the server address.
7. NAT-T issue. Linux will reply the long packet echo reply out of order.
8. Modified MTU/MRU response.
9. Modified Support PPPoE/L2TP/PPTP fragmentation
10. Modified RFC 3360. TCP RST handling
11. Fixed buffer leakage bug.
12. Added the DHCP option 55 support.
13. Added Filter IDENT(Port 113) to block that port from port scan.
14. Fixed DHCP lease time being too large will cause the router to request IP every 1 min
15. Fixed port forwarding disabled will still allow access through the WAN
16. Fixed fast web upgrade displaying correctly in web browsers
17. Modified PPTP max MTU size from 1400 to 1460 When enable PPTP or PPPoE WAN connection type that MTU won't be enable automatically.
18. Fixed remote port number not working correctly
19. Fixed multicast UDP fragment packets (Media server in WAN) from the WAN will cause the router to reboot
20. Fixed Cisco response VPN pass-through (UDP+ESP) packets connection to disconnect
21. Fixed DNS will not query if DMZ is enabled
22. Added support system information page
23. Modified MSN L2L for proper support for 4.7 and 5.0 connect.

Advise please, has anybody else up-dated on the BEFSR81 router

Re: Router advice needed!

No replies 23:00hrs so with blindfold on I pressed the button to upgrade the firmware as the list had quite a few fixes (see below) the upgrade went fine with no problems and I didn't have to make any changes. The Linksys router gets my vote as being idiot proof
