Question .tmp files can I dump them.

Running Win XP. I defrag and use disc cleanup on a fairly regular basis, also clean the IE cache . In my Windows/Internet Logs file are a large number of .tmp files some dating back over 12 months. Is it safe for me to delete .tmp files from this folder.

Re: .tmp files can I dump them.

Many thanks for that, I usually delete the older ZA logs and it does appear from that link that I can ditch the .tmp ones as well. Will leave them in recycle for a few days just in case.

Re: .tmp files can I dump them.

Someone correct me if I`m wrong, but I was under the impression that a .tmp file is only necessary if it is in use at the moment you come to examine it. In the past when I have had a tidy up I just attempt to delete all the .tmp files, if any are in use you won`t be able to delete then. As far as I can tell it has never done my PC any harm.

Re: .tmp files can I dump them.

tmp files are ..... "temporary".

You can delete them at any time - any that are still in use will prevent you.

Re: .tmp files can I dump them.

I thought that this was the case, just wanted to make sure.

The little beggars kept re copying themselves, I was trying to delete to many at once. All nice and clean again.

Re: .tmp files can I dump them.

If you're running IE you could change your settings to clear history and change the amount of disk space that temporary internet files take up. I have mine set to 40mb as a max where as I believe windows takes a %age of the drive space as a default which if you have a large drive can mean 100's of MB of tmp files.

If you read the link from ianathuth you will see that these are not temporary internet files but files created by Z Alarm when true vector has shut down in error or for other reasons. Some of them were over 2MB, and lots of them.
Anyone else using Z Alarm checked their C:/Windows/Internet Log files recently ?
