Wireless Networking (Quick Question...)

Hey all.

I'm trying to set up a wireless network in my house but I got a query.

Can I use a wireless bridge from one brand and expect it to work on a network set up by a wireless router of another brand?

Basically, I want to buy this wireless router made by Belkin: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=45623 ...and use it with this wireless bridge made by Netgear: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=52755

Will it work? Or do I have to buy a router/bridge of the same make?

Cheers y'all.

I use a linksys router and a belkin pcmcia card, and my mate has a 3com card on the same network. I don't see why the situation should be any different for a bridge/router communication. As far as i know there aren't restrictions between makes, but it is best to double check with the manufacturers of each product just to be sure.

In theory there is no reason it should not work.

You may well have problems I'm afraid.

In theory, it should all work, but......

Re: Wireless Networking (Quick Question...)

Hmm.....the article did say:

"The public perception of this remains low, mostly because home users rarely bother to enable security in Wi-Fi."

...which I'm not intending to do anyways (only using it for Xbox Live and maybe connecting to my laptop). But I can see I'm probably gonna have to do some tinkering to get it working...so expect me to come back to the boards and ask you more about that when I get it

Like I said, guess I'll have to see what happens. The tension is rising..

Re: Wireless Networking (Quick Question...)

Are you trying to share out broadband across the network?

Unless you already have a router, you would need a Wireless ROUTER, not just an access point which merely extends the network as it is.

Re: Wireless Networking (Quick Question...)

Hi,
I've got a BELKIN wireless router,
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45621
a BELKIN wireless PCMCIA card,
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45581
and an EBUYER extra value compact flash card
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=50919

I've added extra devices from time to time and this all works fine.

The only problem I've ever had is probably from the NTL side of the setup - I have to re-boot the set-top-box and the router to gain access to the router setup menu - anybody else have this problem?

The chief reason for buying BLEKIN was their network wizard - www.belkin.co.uk - this made is so easy to identify what components I needed and I also felt that buying from one supplier and one brand (the IPAQ was a later addition) should avoid possible problems of compatibility.

The Netgear WAP only plugs into a wired network/router, thus giving you wireless capabilities, so you don't necessarily need a wireless router.

Woah, hold up. Ok, I'm a bit confused now - I've got the normal 600k broadband service from ntl using the silver ntl modem which is connected via a wire directly to the box outside my house.

I want to create a wireless network to indeed share my broadband connection to my Xbox connection upstairs as well as indeed to my laptop (when not using it on my Xbox).

So do I need the wireless access point (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45623) or the "Wireless Cable/DSL Internet Gateway Router " (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45621)??

Please reply as soon as, because I could still change my order before it's shipped...

Re: Wireless Networking (Quick Question...)

If you use NTL's Xbox service (which gives you a second IP), and ONLY ONE PC and an Xbox, you can run with no router (just the access point).

If you already have a wired router, you can extend it to wireless using an access point on one of the outputs.

If none of the above are true - eg:
1. You're using an Xbox without buying the extra service from NTL (you may be violating TOS)
2. You want to use more than one PC
3. You do not already have a wired broadband router

Then you WILL need a wireless router, instead of just an access point.

Cheers for that. I've switched it to the Wireless Cable/DSL Internet Gateway Router.
