599! That's a damn good price, I paid 429 for the G5 I should have waited until next payday and bought the 300D instead, mind you Jessops do a 30 day money back, no quibble guarantee so I'll test the G5 out on Sunday, if it's crap I'll take it back

ive got a powershot s40 that ive had for a couple of years and i thought it was good (until i tried the 300D). Tried it will a 300mm lense which is affectivey a 480mm lense on this camera, the light was low but the results were AMAZING managed.

My advice? Take it back to Jessops!!!

dont forget 599 is the body only price

The wha? Does that mean it includes no innards or just no lense? I've already found an issue with the G5 taking photo's with the flash in wide angle causes a shadow in the bottom right of the photo, did a quick mooch round for reviews of the camera and it turns out other's have the same problem, it also manages to create nasty purple halo's around lights with night shots, but the A80 did exactly the same. The A80 though was perfect for day time/low light scenery shots which is mainly what I used it for, not sure I can stretch to (or get away with) buying an E300 yet.

Yes body only means it has no lens. They sell it like this as it accepts the EF lenses which if you have a Canon SLR like i do, the lenses fit the D300 body.

However as the focal length is multiplied by 1.6 the 18mm to whatever it is lens that comes with it is very useful as this makes a 30mm to whatever lens

Ooh, nice. I've still got an A70. Had it for about a year. Probably get a new digicam (Canon again) later this year.

Cool.

I don't think I'd stretch to a 300D, but I may go for an S50 at some point.

The "halo" effect is also known as "Purple fringeing" and is common amongst some digicams. The G5 is a super camera and was top of my list for a compact digital camera, but I took the plunge and went for the EOS10D. It uses the same image processor as the 300D, but puts it all into a tougher body with a greater degree of customisation of its features, hence the higher price. That said, if you do not want that sophistication, then the 300D is an excellent choice. I have handled the 300D and find it smaller than the 35mm cameras I am used to handling, but they do offer an extended battery grip, that holds 2 batteries and offers a vertical shutter release. It doe smake it easier to hold (but heavier!)
Our friends at 7dayshop also offer clone batteries for these cameras (the 10D, 300D and the G5 use the same battery) at very good prices. The official Canon BP511 will set you back @£55. The clones will cost £15 each. I have 2 of them and have had no problems.

i bought clone batteries from www.mydigitaldiscount.com there $10.99 for the 1400 mAh ones so last long than the originals. Carriage is $22.00 so its not generally woth ordering them. However the Sandisk Extreme compactflash cards are a very good price of about $210 so worth buying batteries then. Also placed order with them on Tuesday (theyre in New York), they dispatch by UPS and i had the stuff in my hands on Thursday which i thought was VERY impressive

Very I'd say!

I did find that my 10D does not like the cheaper CF cards (Integral is the brand) I use Sandisk without any problems whatsoever!

Or Chromatic Abberation (though, I'm not sure if that's the american spelling). It's bloody annoying, Derry looks really impressive if you look down to the quay from the new Foyle Bridge at night, but try and take a picture and the amount of street/building lights totally ruins it for Canon cameras. I was going to buy a Sony DSC-F717, the shape put me off initially, I grew to like it after looking at several photo's of it, and ordered it from pixmania last night, they then emailed me and told me I'd have to head 3 or 4 miles into town, find a fax machine and fax a copy of a recent utility bill to some french fax number ... I then cancelled the order, drove into town and bought the G5 from Jessops, so far I'm a bit unimpressed, the lens obscures half of the damn viewfinder!
