Embedding a video in a PowerPoint presentation

I am trying to embed a 14Mb video into a Powerpoint presentation.

However I am having no luck in doing so - it always wants to link to it, which is not what I want it to do. I do not want there to be references to the file on my hard drive as it will be in a different location to that when it is at college (currently is on the "s" drive but will be on some network path at college) and I do not wish to spend time wasting trying to get it working there as our group is up first.

How do you do it? I've searched the help files but with no avail

Re: Embedding a video in a PowerPoint presentation

I don't know if this is any help (and I don't know how you could embed the video), but you could try loading the stuff beforehand and testing it (always a good idea when it comes to presentations).

Alternatively, you could consider sticking the ppt and video on a pen drive (assuming you have one), and plug that into the usb port on the machine you will be running the presentation from. That way, (I presume), it will still link to the correct path. I don't know if the usb connection will be fast enough to stream the video from though.

Re: Embedding a video in a PowerPoint presentation

OK...depending on which version of Powerpoint you're using, it will make a difference.

In Office XP, the simplest way is to use the templates, and if you scroll down the list, you'll find one that includes 'media' or 'content'

Once you've selected your clip, it will ask you if you want the movie to play automatically - meaning when the slide appears, or when you tell the movie to start.

The problems you'll encounter with video in Powerpoint will be many I'm afraid, and a lot will depend on your OS and speed of the PC you're running it on. If your movie fil is on a network drive by the way, you're probably best putting the whole presentation there too.

Possibly a more elegant solution is to hyperlink to the network driver - this will open an instance of Windows Media Player when you click it.

I've zipped a PPT file with a sound and a hyperlink as an example....insert your own media in the space of these and see if it works....good luck!

Re: Embedding a video in a PowerPoint presentation

I've had this problem before and the reason it happens is becuase Powerpoint sets itself a default file size where anything over a certain size gets linked, and not embeded.

To get round this, you just change the size.

1) In Powerpoint, go to the options menu.

2) It should be under the General tab.

3) Change the file size limit so it is BIGGER than your video:

(So for example if you have a 15mb video...put in 20000)
As you will see in the settings, it says Sound, but it should work for video.
I havent used it in ages so let me know if all works.
