Windows XP problem
I installed new graphics card today, problem is Windows XP won't start in normal mode, only safe mode and debugging mode, although debugging mode seems to do the job the same as normal mode, what does it do?
Also have Windows 98 as backup but that won't load up at all, hasn't done for ages, and start up floppy disk won't work now
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

Re: Windows XP problem
When in safe mode have you tried removing all signs of any graphics adaptors (including hidden devices) and then rebooting?
Could also check the card is seated properly and any fans are working correctly. Check for debris in the slot the adaptor is plugged into as well.

Drivers disabled yes, no external power needed (XFX is the brand i think), works fine in debugging and safe mode as i said, havent tried no startup items, i will do tomorrow when I have time.
Havent diabled on board graphics in bios, didn't realise I needed to, as I said, previous card worked fine.
Thanks for feedback, I shall try some of the ideas tomorrow
EDIT: Card is in slot fine, checked that first, also XP fails after boot screen, just goes black for long long time

As I thought. Its confusing the computer. Its like telling someone he/she has four hands but they can only use two

Drivers incorrectly (or not) installed
Your video drivers need to changed to the new card. Run the disk you had with the card and install the drivers.
If you don't have the drivers go to the manufactures web site and down load them and put them (when unpacked) in to the windows/sys folder and restart.
The other replies are very good and that is what I would do if the card did not work, but it is, as is running up to safe mode.

Re: Windows XP problem
You don't just need to install the new drivers, you need to rid the machine of EVERY trace of the old ones, example, years back I changed from a Nvidia card to an ATI card, didn't uninstall the drivers for the Nvidia card first, just slapped the Radeon in and tried to overinstall the Catalyst drivers, totally and utterly forked it, exactly the same symptoms you currently have. Depending on which card you had previously, there are tools to remove the drivers completely (that's a hint for you to tell us what it was btw).

Bifta your computer should have picked up the ATI card when you installed it. Therefore the computer then would have started to look for the correct drives to use. It would not have tried using the Nvidia one's believe me. You will have had another problem

Uh ... no, it doesnt quite work like that. It's a known problem, have a trawl around Rage3d and you'll find out. After I used Detonator Destroyer http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/ to remove all traces of the Nvidia drivers it worked perfectly, please don't infer that I'm an idiot because I find that a little rich coming from you.
