help - poor dvd-r media
hi,
ive gone and purchased some dvd-r media from a company 2 find my drive wont write it at the speed stated (x4) but it will write it at (x2) but its unreadable in my PS2, dvd player or computer.
i've done some research on the disc i got (DATA WRITE READ V2) and it turns out its a cheapy make made by a company called PRINCO.
I am angry and frustrated at the predicament im now in. I have 50 of these useless pieces of plastic and if i try and return them 2 the place i got them http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk i fear they are gonna tell me they will refund but i will have 2 pay the postage. im angry that ive paid for something useless and should never be sold. can i complain 2 trading standards. any idea what i can do? i got these discs because i was using the yellow datawrite classic disks (sometimes associated with the name BULKPAQ) and i thought these discs would be fine because from same manufacturer.
any advice appreciated or stories of people who've been in a similar predicament would be encouraging.

What are you using to burn the disks, & what are you burning on to them?

Re: help - poor dvd-r media
stamp92, do you know the firmware of your DVD burner. I have the NEC2500 too. Mine came with 1.05. I have flashed it up to 1.06. I'll try and dig up the link for you.
You may find some DVD players can't play -r and some can't play +r. Have you played other -r disks on your player?

Re: help - poor dvd-r media
Look under the "Firmwares that work" section. About halfway down the page:
http://tdb.rpc1.org/
Go for this one:
RPC1 and Rip Lock firmware based on Windows 1.06.

Re: help - poor dvd-r media
I can recommend the Memorex -R disks from Play.com. Fairly reasonable at 25 for £17.99 with free delivery. They are 4x.

I have a Nec 2500A (its just a pioneer A07/107 in a different case) the firmware i have atm is 1.06 link there is an update for the NEC 1300A but not for the 2500A.
If your having speed problems when writing, makesure that your data transfer mode is set to DMA mode & not PIO mode.
Access Device Manager by right-clicking My Computer in Windows (look under the Hardware tab under Windows XP).
In Device Manager, double click ATAPI/IDE Controllers & double click 'Primary IDE Channel' or 'Secondary IDE Channel' according to the connection of your DVD writer. If the transfer mode is set to PIO, change to DMA.

Re: help - poor dvd-r media
BTW when you flash it, make sure you have taken any media out of the burner.

Re: help - poor dvd-r media
I once bought 25 BULKPAQ dvds and I reckon I had to throw away 50% of them due to read errors. The trouble with these cheaper dvds is that they are usually overprints, what this means is that they failed the quality control checks first time round and so get reprinted.
My advice is to buy Arita dvds by Ritek, about 75p each. Burnt over 100 disks and could count the number that I have thrown away on one hand, to be honest I can only remember throwing 1 away.
stamp92 it seems strange that you can't even read the disks especially from your PC, usually the disks will read fine it's when you start to get to the end of the disk that the read errors occur. What software are you using to burn the dvds and are you closing the disk? I take it you are burning movies, have you created the correct dvd structure?

I pay about £13.00 for a spindle of 25. I know that is cheap, but like I say, I've never had an issue.

Always use Ritek, I've never known anyone go wrong with them (the ones with the purple dye)
