PS3 - A few questions
Evening All
I have been looking at getting a PlayStation 3 as my 360 is about to be visited by the RROD. I just have a few questions about the PS3 in general.
1. What is the noise level of the console like when it is in operation (i.e. are the cooling fans or the disc drive particularly noisy when they are running) as I have heard that the noise level on the 40GB console is the same as the slim PS2, Just wandered if this was true ?
2. Can you change the batteries in the controllers or are they built in permanently?
3. Can you buy a component cable for it and can it output in High Definition (up to 1080i) as my current TV has component available?
Thanks in advance.

Re: PS3 - A few questions
Hay, I own a PS3 but the 60GB model . I will answer your questions best I can.
1 - The noise level is very low, especially if your used to the noise of the 360. It does have a fan in that only kicks in when the system becomes very hot and does raise noise level slightly but nothing compaired to the 360 so if you used to the 360 the the PS3 will sound silent almost lol I know I have them running side by side.
2 - The controllers do not need batteries. They are wireless and can be recharged by plugging them into the console with the USB cable provided.
3 - Yes is can out put in HD, Now am not 100% sure which cables come with the 40GB model as I bought the 60GB model on launch but I know 100% you can buy component cable for it.
Hope that helped you out a bit with your choice.

Re: PS3 - A few questions
The PS3 comes with standard (low definition) leads so you would need to buy component or even better HDMI (If your TV supports them).
It also displays up to 1080p which is better than 1080i (although people will argue that the difference cannot be noticed)

Re: PS3 - A few questions
Does your TV accept HDMI ? if so I would surgest that like D Skids said if not component will give you really good quality anyway.

Re: PS3 - A few questions
1) My 40GB (well, 250GB ) PS3 is much much quieter than my 360 Elite. It's quieter when playing games, quieter when playing DVDs, quieter when streaming videos, quieter when in the XMB (PS3 dashboard)... Some games are a bit noisier than others for disc access (e.g. Uncharted), but even then they're still quieter than on a 360 (try playing Mass Effect late at night... )
2) The batteries are built-in, & cannot be user-replaced. IIRC, Sony have said that if/when the controller battery eventually dies, they will replace the controller for you.
3) It can display all the way up to 1080p. Available leads include composite video (yellow RCA phono, can be plugged into a SCART adapter, it's the worst connection available), RGB SCART (much better than composite), component (better than RGB SCART, allows progressive scan, allows HD resolutions), & HDMI (the best of the bunch). The PS3 only comes with a composite video lead with SCART adapter (rather cheeky IMO seeing as the 360 Premium comes with a component lead as well as composite, & the 360 Elite comes with component *and* HDMI leads, as well as composite). If your TV has HDMI, I'd recommend that over component.

Re: PS3 - A few questions
Also consider that 1080p TV sets are quite rare in the UK and their are few games that run 1080p native. Blu-Ray will however.

My current TV has DVI and Component, My V+ is currently occupying the DVI port.
I do plan to get a bigger TV later in the year with HDMI ports on it so really Component would only be a temporary setup for the time being.

Do you mind if I ask why? I am quite surprised by this, although the PS£ has improved massively over the last few months I would still have to say the 360 leads it in terms of gameplay?

Re: PS3 - A few questions
I also use my PS3 alot more than my 360, My reason mostly being that I use my PS3 as a media center really playing films, TV shows, music etc etc. I would not want to say which is better as I love them both and dont want to start another console war thread.
The only thing I would say is you will be surprised how silent it is almost after having a 360. (360 is great to, just noisy lol)

well for me the PS3 is more reliable as i dont hear or read much about this system breaking down easily as at the moment i am on my 3rd 360 :-( , playing online for free is a big plus for me because it works just as good as xbox live so i see no need to pay for xbox live , you can customize the ps3 more easily with thousands of free themes and pics where as on the 360 you have to pay for the good themes which is just another M$ money making ripp off .
Blu ray dvd looks amazing its crisp and clear and most important of all the games , most of the big games are multi format and for me there are far more ps3 games i want to play than i do on the 360 , i am not bashing the 360 it could be a superb but after all this time they still cant make it reliable and in this day and age its a rip off its no fun switching on your 3rd xbox and wondering will it last the day !!!
and i must state in no way am i a fanboy ( i hate that term) i own ps3 , wii, 360, ps2, game cube and 3 pc's

I agree with you, The 360 gameplay is excellent and XBox Live is good fun. But this will be the fourth 360 i would have had go wrong since i bought it in March 2006 including one which went wrong after 4 days. Basically i just have no faith in its reliability anymore.
I had a PS2 which i bought on launch day and i never had a thing go wrong with it, since then i passed it on to my brother and it is still going fault free after 7 years.

Re: PS3 - A few questions
PS3 -
Low Noise
Great Controllers - very robust and good battery life before it needs recharging
Great looking on HD. If I remember rightly you can also upscale normal DVD's and PS1&2 games for better picture quality.
Mine has been very good since I bought it on release day last year. However, my PS3 is now making a horrible grinding noise when powering up. It doesn't seem to be damaging discs or anything. So I am going to call Sony and get it exchanged. I also took out Continous Play which is excellent peice of mind for if your PS3, PS2 or PSP breaks beyond it's warranty they will replace it with no quibbles. Good monthly prices too!
