No price cut for Euro PS3 console
source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6896261.stm
Quote:
Sony is not cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe, but will offer free games and accessories instead.
There is also no word of plans for an 80GB version of the console in Europe.
Last week Sony said it would drop the US price of the 60GB PS3 by $100 (£50), and introduced a new 80GB version at the original price of $599 (£300).
In Europe gamers will get a "starter pack" at an unchanged price of £425 for the 60GB machine, with two games and two controllers included.
...
In the UK, the PlayStation 3 remains £125 more expensive than the equivalent Xbox 360 bundle of console and games and £225 more expensive than the Nintendo Wii with two games.
|
Daft move, imo. They need to offer a base console without extra add-ons, instead of chucking more stuff into the package and keeping the same RRP.

Re: No price cut for Euro PS3 console
I would agree £425 for a new PS3 (regardless of whether you get games with it or not) is RIDICULOUS! I could build a VERY high spec PC for a little bit more than that...
I do want a PS3 but can't justify it, not just because of the price of the console but the games are on average about £49 EACH! The PS2s were about £100 cheaper when they came out and the games were only about £39.99 - £44.99 each.

True about the PS2, But as I have said many times on this forum (usually to PS3 fans) the PS2 is not a good comparison. Times have changed in gaming since the release of the PS2 and the market has grown. As well as expectations in graphics and development costs to meet the increased power as a result of those expectations. So any price/sales comparison is meaningless.
Also, I'ld be impressed if you could match the power of the PS3 with a £425 to £500 PC. GPU maybe but the processor no.

I wasn't trying to say I could match the Processing Power... I was just saying that basically the quality of games, graphics etc was just as good on a PC. And I'm not a fan of either console it was just my general opinion of Value For Money.

No way on Earth you can build a computer for a 'little bit more' than the price of the PS3 and match the graphics of it.

Re: No price cut for Euro PS3 console
Anyone know what the specs of the PS3 are? Does it have 2GB RAM? What would the equivalent video card be for us PC users?

If i wanted to argue more it could be also said it doesnt meat the spec of the PS3 (Blu-ray).
Also there is the point that game developers have to work to many spec PC's, PS3 developers have to work to 1.
Also PC's need upgrading at least every 2 year. at about 5 year consoles still go strong bringing out great games that would lag on the PC.

You actually only said graphics, so i could have skimped on everything else mate, i built a balanced tower their.
You have a point though, a PS3 has a Blu-Ray drive, and a PC may need upgrading every 2 years or so. Unless, you are prepared to game at 1024x768 on medium or something, which i do anyway, not sure how out of spec my X1600XT is, but it's still holding strong, as was my friends Radeon 9550 until recently (About a month ago, where it decided to shed a ram module somehow)

I agree they are stupid for not givin europe the price drop to but who know's maybe we will get it for christmas as its been out longer in the US.
About the games though - I have not paid over £40 for a game on the PS3. I dont know were your going but I can get any PS3 game for £40 or under. Try unsing sites like play.com etc etc always get the games cheaper there.

ME lol
I think that was sony's point - Its not just a games console. I have said this many times. If you just want a games console go with the 360 or wii but if you want that something extra go with PS3.

I never said you did need it, i said if i wanted to argue and make it spec for spec, which i didnt but i just mentioned.
The PS3 has plenty of games as well, if you count the PS2 and PS1 games also. You cant really compare PC games as where do you draw a line from were it started?

Well you couldnt, a PC is a PC, it needs all the parts to make it work, i mean it would be pointless building a PC just to play games on that cost more than the PS3 or Xbox and was no better. I buy a £425 PS3 and i can plug it in and start, I build a PC that costs more to get about the same graphics, i have to spend time building it, and then once i build it im sat there looking at a tower ( which you didnt include, nor did you include a mouse or keyboard or controller or moniter.
Hence its pointless doing what you said. To get a serious gaming PC to out perform the PS3 now anf ot maybe the next couple of years you need to spend closer to a thousand pound.

We basically have got a price drop. Unless you buy the PS3 just to sit there and look at. The cheapest you would be able to buy the bundle for, before it comes out is about £500, we are getting it for £425. The only complaint will be the games you can choose.

Well for the console we havent. I paid for the console for full price and am extreamly happy with it and think it was worth every penny.
I can see were people are comming from and I think sony should put a drop on the console so more people can enjoy the console the way I have.
I understand your point though shawty. I beleive gamestation are selling the console alone for £400.

Lets say they dropped the price to £350, thats a £75 saving, You dont just buy the console and sit and stare at it. So 2 games would shift that price up to near enough the price of the PS3 now. Price cut or bundle, its the same difference.

I agree but its still not a drop to the console either way which is what people look at. I think the way they are doing bundles is good but still people will look at the PS3 price tag and thats what puts them off.
