Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
The lack of scaling (up and down) on the ps3 is the most anoying feature i have with it compared with my x360 which does it all nicely.
Hopefully DLNA will work nicely with the ps3 and allow the playback of normal divx / xvid / x264 files (somthing the x360 is very hit / mis with) as then i'd be able to dedicate my hd-tv to the ps3 (its hdmi port is shared with my pc) as ati's dual monitor support in vista is atrocious

Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
Like the 360, the PS3 does not support playback of divx/xvid.
Only way to do it is to transcode divx/xvid to a PS3-friendly format, or stick Linux on the PS3 & then simply use VLC or whatever to play everything.

H.264 and Mpeg 4 part 2 were added with the x360's spring update. I believe the ps3 can play them you just need a custom ps3 version of it

Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
The 360 supports a lot of mp4 files but it depends how its encoded, ironically, files with a mp3 audio track do not seem to work

First you have to wait for PSP firmware 3.5, which is coming before month end.
Great update from Sony, can't wait to try my PS2 games and DVD's out in 1080p!
Wow - it will print photos on my Epson printer! - Can't wait to try that out

The access anywhere in the world sounds cool but i think you would need it on and not sure what you would want off it.

Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
The new firmware is much improved on the old one and has just about made up for the lack of hardware scaler chip, as not only does it upscale it also downscales as i can now play casino royal blu-ray disc at 720p
The networked media player works ok with wmp11 but could do with some work as a) its slow b) you can only play one thing at a time, you have to go back to xmb to select the next and when you do that playback stops
I've also crashed the thing twice now.

Types of MPEG-4 supported by the 360 & PS3...
MPEG-4 Part 10 (aka AVC aka H.264)
MPEG-4 Part 2 Simple Profile (SP)
Neither of them support MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile... which is what xvid & divx use.
To play a video originally in divx/xvid on a 360 or PS3, it has to be converted (transcoded) into something the 360 or PS3 will play.
Although the PS3 has the bonus of Linux support, meaning you can install Linux on the PS3, & then use something like VLC or another media player on Linux to play divx/xvid etc, rather than transcode it to something the PS3's own media player will play.

Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
You can now remote play from your PSP on the internet as PSP fimware update has just been launched. It is really easy to use as well, and works quite well!

Re: PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
Firmware 1.81 was released today. Although its mostly only small fixes from the 1.80 release. Also more backward compatability with ps2 games.
Also taken from playstation.com blog:-
"Just a quick update: we’ll be making available firmware upgrade 1.81 tomorrow which will fix a few small issues some of you have noticed. Most notably is the RGB Full setting which a few of you wrote in about. In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. You can download the update tomorrow from PlayStation.com or through your System Update option on the PS3 XMB."
