Re: xbox live starter kit
Thats all you need in one respect yes.
However there is a sting in the tail..
You will also need lots of coffee, a comfortable armchair & a bigger TV, plenty of pro-plus to keep you awake the following day, to say goodbye to your friends that you have a normal social life with (don't worry, you will get lots of new ones online) and also a mop/bucket & some clean undies because you will spend a lot of time ******ing yourself laughing!
Go on, go get it - you know you want to.
Oh as a warning, when you wear & remove the headset, be very careful as it is rather fragile at the point where the headset clips onto the headband & is prone to snapping (requiring a simple repair).

The only 'sting' I can think of that might annoy is the fact that you need a valid credit card to register with Xbox LiVE, other than that, everything is included.
See you on LiVE !

Re: xbox live starter kit
You will need to deceide how to connect:
1) Using a Router
2) Using ICS (ie 2 network cards in PC with xbox connected to PC)
3) swapping cables
There are loads of existing links about the pros and cons of each - shouldn't take much effort to find them!

I think I will go for the simple swapping cable options
for the time being
but - with 2 network cards in the pc as you describe
does that mean I have to go for the £5 more package to
get the additional IP address or will the computer with the 2 cards just
make the xbox appear like another computer?

Re: xbox live starter kit
You will not need the £5 packeage for any reason except because your a total PC idiot & have only 1000000th of a brain cell.
And as I doubt you are not then steer clear of that package, dont let NTL know your using the Xbox 7 read up on the info about cloning your MAC address etc.
Using ICS will not need the £5 package & there is ample info on how to set that up too.
When I first started I used a RJ45 double wall socket (and backbox) that was simply wired up to link each socket together, then plugged either the PC or the Xbox in one socket & the STB via a short patch lead into the other. I found doing this was easier than reaching around the back of the STB to keep changing it.
The Router option is the best as it will not require the PC to be on etc, however going ICS via the PC may also be less hassle than swapping plugs all the time & will only cost you about 5-15 quid for the network card.
As for the credit card, you have no option but to use one to sign up with it.
if you do not have one, then thats where your problem starts.
Its uncle Bills way of ensuring that he has traceability/accounatbility/screwability to his customers.

Re: xbox live starter kit
I definitely agree with Matuka - stay away from the £5/month NTL Broadband & Console Service!!!!
You'll be fine with a direct/ICS/router connection - all 3 are easy to set-up, & are much cheaper than the NTL Broadband & Console Service.
A list of useful links for XBL & broadband:
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=218
(includes links for the XBL compatible router list; info on using a router, ICS, direct connex; etc)
Help with using XBL with a simple direct connection to an NTL supplied cable modem or STB:
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=715
Link for a cheap, easy to set-up, & fully XBL compatible router:
Linksys BEFSR41 at Amazon.co.uk, only £40.89 (& free delivery)
