Ntl 1mb Service
I'm currently using the 600k modem with NTL. I would like to
host some games on Ghost Recon but I'm limited to four players, if I have anymore, the game really starts to lag.
does anyone use the 1mb service to host games ?? if you do, is it worth the extra bucks ???
if I do upgrade, how can I check I'm getting the 1mb line ??

You already asked this question here:

Re: Ntl 1mb Service
For a speedtest I use: pcpitstop
At one time, I was getting download speeds of only 150K when testing using this. I phoned NTL to complain, and they asked me to confirm how I was testing my connection speed. When I told them I was using pcpitstop, I expected them to say that it wasn't reliable - but they didn't, they just told me that they had 'just noticed' a fault, and it would be fixed.
Guess what - it was fixed - now I never seem to get less than 300K (with regular peaks at over 500K). Not ideal, but good enough to prevent lag on Live (don't host often though)

Re: Ntl 1mb Service
I use Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test prog, available here:
http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm
There's also a good upload speed tester here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/BandwidthUpTest.asp
I have the NTL 1meg service.
My download speed is fine, but my upload sucks, so I can't really host any better than someone with a 600k connection.

Well thats partly due to why I have downgraded from the 1 meg to the 600 one.
I thought whats the point of paying an extra tenner a month when I hardly host and hardly download anything from the net.

Re: Ntl 1mb Service
that takes the pi** !!
I assumed the 1MB modem was the bees knees.
if I want to host games, would I have to knock NTL on the head & go with BT ADSL instead ?
or is there another option with NTL ?

Not until providers here go beyond 256k upload. Telewest are doing (I think) a 2Mb service but again its only 256k upload!

The 1meg service is great, unless you're unlucky like me.
My local UBR is apparently quite oversubscribed, so I get a crappy upload due to the number of people using it (or using my upstream channel, at least).
Downloading is fine, but I just can't host anything decent 'cos of the low upload.
I know several people from XBL who have the NTL 1meg service, but live in other cities/towns, & they're able to host good sized games easily.

Re: Ntl 1mb Service
Does anyone have the link to that Website where they list ALL the providers and their services, categorised by many things including upload?
I know Boom has the link, which I ask him for every so often! (Sorry Boom! )

Re: Ntl 1mb Service
Tez, I see you live in the Cambridge area, maybe I might be ok as I live in Camberley, Surrey. I will call NTL tonight and asked what the situation is with my local UBR.
