HD DVD Drive for 360 (external!)

Hidden away in this BBC post is an interesting paragraph:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4583474.stm

It says:
"The Xbox executive also announced that Microsoft would be releasing a high definition HD DVD external drive for the 360 later this year. The console itself just has a standard DVD player."

Another little piece here from Teamxbox:

Well it'll start off external anyway, not a bad idea for people who wish to upgrade to an HD-DVD player and its likely to be cheaper than buying a specific HD DVD player, plus it means early adopters of the 360 don't need to buy a new one just to play HD movies.

Re: HD DVD Drive for 360 (external!)

External is a much better idea so all those who already have 360's won't have to get new ones when the HD-DVD drives are released.

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen...

Add-ons like this have a bit of a history of bombing it. Like the Playstation Harddrive.. it just splits the market for developers and the take up is always tiny.

Sega CD anyone?

Re: HD DVD Drive for 360 (external!)

I'd buy one, especially if it'll load up all the 360 games and it's quieter than the current dvd drive.

I'd agree with you if the HD drive was marketed as a games upgrade - however I imagine Microsoft will pitch it as a media add-on (to prevent Sony having an advantage with the PS3 blue-ray drive).

Only if enough people buy it - will the developers make use of it too!
