xbox360 data transfer question

I read on the MS website that when using the official data transfer cable between two xbox360 hard drives the data on one hard drive (source) totally overwrites the data on the second (destination) hard drive.

I have an issue where I currently have two 360 Elites (one is my sons) which both have many different game saves on them.

Now, I've preordered the new "slim" console for my son on a trade in deal with Game (£100.00 for console & £25.00 for wireless adaptor..not too bad)

Before collection I wanted to transfer all my sons game saves temporarily onto my console, then transfer back onto his new "slim" console, but from what I am reading this may not be possible, as if I were to do this all the game saves on his console would wipe out all the game saves on my console...

I asked the manager at Game if I could perform all the data transfers onto the new console, then bring the old one to the shop once complete, but they won't allow that...trade ins have to be at the time of purchase.

Does anybody know if it will be possible to do it ?

Thanks folks.

Re: xbox360 data transfer question

Best thing to do then is get a USB memory stick and transfer all his saves to that.
If there is any DLC you could just re download it.

Re: xbox360 data transfer question

I wasn't aware that that was possible.
Will need to be a pretty big memory stick..., although its only his MW2 data he wants to save, so maybe a couple of GB should cover it.
Is this done via the settings ?
Once I reclaim his gamertag will any DLC be rechargeable or should it still show as paid for under his gamertag ?
Sorry for all the questions....I'm quite new to the gaming scene, and being in my forties probably a little too old :-)

Re: xbox360 data transfer question

Yea the latest system update enabled the usb mem stick support. Mostly cause the new slim doesn't have the old mem card ports anymore.

You just connect the stick and when you go to the settings and storage you can go to each file and copy/transfer to usb mem.

Content will still be free to re download once the account is recovered.

As long as you get the game saves they shouldn't be to large, maybe a few hundred MB. It will depend if you also have the DLC downloaded. Although I think it is easier just to re download DLC.

You will only need to save your game saves, just redownload DLC
