Using a XB360 Controller on Win Vista

Hi all,

I've heard and read on some websites that I can use my XB360 control pad on Windows XP/Vista. I have tried to do this both wirelessly and using my play & charge cable with absolutely no success.

I even downloaded the drivers and software from Microsoft and it still doesn't work.

The message I get when I plug the USB in is "Windows cannot install the drivers for this hardware".

Anyone managed to do this successfully?

Or am I going to have to buy a decent flight stick for FSim X?

Re: Using a XB360 Controller on Win Vista

I have used both a wired & wireless Xbox contoller on my laptop (XP MCE) with out problems, I had to buy an adapter for the wireless one though.

The charge and play thing will not work I tried so I bought the item in the link above

To be honest you will be better of buying a proper joystick (with throttle) for FSX

I was going to post almost exactly the same as the above (apart from I don't have XP MCE).

I used to have a wired controller for my xbox, and loved playing SOME windows games on it. Then we ordered a load of Xboxs at work (one of the course I support is teaching game design and primarliy uses the Xbox), and they all came with wired controllers apart from one.

As we can't trust some of our students with wireless controllers and can't secure them, my boss gave me the wireless controller on condition I give him my wired one.

So, while I do have a lovely wireless controller, I miss the wired one. Not sure I miss it enough to buy the adaptor though.

Re: Using a XB360 Controller on Win Vista

Had the wired XBox 360 controller working on both XP and Vista. Only XP needed drivers. For vista the controller installed automatically.

Have you removed the controller from the system config and tried re-attahcing it.

Re: Using a XB360 Controller on Win Vista

Aaaah... Thanks alot for your inputs guys!

I think I'll stick with purchasing a Flight Stick for FSX then. I thought it might have been an easy fix, but don't wanna buy a wireless receiver if I can get a Joystick.

I just thought I might be able to use my current kit as my Dell lappy has built-in bluetooth, which I thought was what the XBox controllers worked on, I must've been mistaken

@ jaimefrost: yes i tried that about 4 times thinking i wasn't doing it right...still didn't work

Ahem, from the original post.

The standard wired controller works fine. The wireless controller only works if you have the xbox wireless reciever plugged into your PC. The play and charge kit does not turn the wireless controller into a wired one.
