Advice on connections

Just a quick question, I already have a xbox 360 connected to my HDTV, its not full 1080p. That one is connected via the component cable, I have recently brought a xbox 360 with the HDMI output.

Basically im asking what would be better.

Component or HDMI?

Re: Advice on connections

to be honest , ive had mine connected via both and didnt really notice much of a difference, so ive left it hooked up via hdmi, as i think its slightly better. the best advice i could give would be to try it and see what you think. i could be wrong but does'nt hdmi do away with the need for additional cables to transmit the sound, so it all taken care of in one lead, which means less clutter behind your tv.

Yes, it's just one lead, whereas component is 5? or 4?, but all run in the same cable until it gets to the TV. I have mine plugged in on Component, as it came with my Xbox, i have tried HDMI but noticed no difference to make me go out and buy another HDMI cable.

Re: Advice on connections

Thanks for the advice! I would try but that means I would have to buy a HDMI cable just to test it, As I didn't get one with the console. I may just keep the component as you guys have said HDMI is slightly better, so no major differences.

maybe you could borrow one, or you could always buy one and if you dont think its of a benefit, take it back and ask for a refund, as long as your carefull with the packaging

or worst case keep it, as i,m sure it will come in handy one day

Check out ebay before parting with stupid amounts of money. You'll get one there for around £5 inc postage, the cheaper the better, they work just the same!!

Re: Advice on connections

I found hdmi to be just a teeny bit sharper than the component connection but the difference really is negligible. One thing I found is that the colour looked a bit flat when swapping over to hdmi so had to increase the saturation on the tv colour profile a little bit. Also, if you usually run your sound into a separate amp from the phono breakout on the component av lead you'll have to take a line out of your tv instead as the hdmi carries the sound. I don't think you can have the sound coming out of the av connector if the hdmi is usd.

i must confess, i hadnt reconnected to my amp since switching to hdmi, so thanks for the info at the bottom of your post, but since i upgraded to a 40 inch toshiba, the sound output is far superior to my last tosh, so ive not needed to really, but i do miss the thump from the sub, so i will have a look at weekend.

re: colour saturation i found mine to improve when i hooked upto HDMI and by quite a margin, i also noticed that shading had improved slightly , i suppose it must effect different tv,s in different ways.

I think it might be more to do with the tv as you say. Maybe each input source has it's own colour profile on my tv ( I never read manuals )

afaik the hdmi will carry all of the surround sound data so it should be possibe to plug this into a dedicated av receiver if you have one. Mine's just connected via a standard RCA phono lead to a Musical Fidelity stereo hi-fi amp and it sounds mint, well worth the effort.

Re: Advice on connections

unfortunately my denon reciever is a few years old now and isnt equipped with hdmi ports so it will have to be phono leads i think, i dont use it that often because the last time i did, i could swear i felt the couch move accross the floor when the sub kicked in, ive got mine connected to Kef speakers and i can honestly say it sounds awesome when cranked up, youve started me off now so i will have a play tonight and see how far i get, luckily enough i live in an end terrace with a nieghbour who is completely deaf, so no probs there, apart from her that must be obeyed saying stuff like "does it have to be that loud",,,,,,,,,,,

Re: Advice on connections

My Samsung TV has separate colour settings for each source, there is a great page on some forum (not very helpful i know...) that gives you decent starting settings.
