X Box Live set up via secondary modem ?
I'm looking for advice as to setting up Xbox Live via a secondary modem.
My current set up is :
Cable TV via V+ box & modem to laptop downstairs.
Cable TV 1x V+ box & 1x V box upstairs via one white cable box split into two outputs (there are two cables from outside box, one for downstairs, one for upstairs)
Currently to connect to XBox Live I power off the modem and disconnect the broadband cable from the modem to my laptop, connect the XBox Live cable and repower the modem...everything OK.
I would like to add a second modem upstairs for a permanent connection to XBox live via the white cable TV box upstairs AND still keep the downstairs modem connected to my lap top.
Is this possible ?
Would there be conflicting issues if both broadband laptop connection AND the XBox live connection were switched on simultanaously ?
Can both the laptop & the Xbox Live share the same IP address, indeed would a set up like I describe above actually work on one IP address ?
Any advice is greatly appreciated ...
Thanks

Re: X Box Live set up via secondary modem ?
*If* Virgin supply you with a second modem, it would work that way. However, as a matter of policy, they only provide one modem per house, and buying your own is not only against the Terms and Conditions of service but probably wouldn't work and may cause Virgin to take action against you.
What you need is a cable compatible router (such as the excellent Linksys WRT54G series). Connect that to your modem and connect your PC/Xbox/Any other devices to that.

Why not get a router?

A router....Doh, of course.... I never thought about that to be honest. I will look into the model you advised Graham....Many thanks.
One other quick question....with two things sharing the same line (for want of a better description) would there be a noticable deteriation of "speed" from the one modem / router ?

My set up at home has the linksys wireless router and we have two xbox360's (both use the official wireless adapter) one main pc and one laptop (all wireless) and don't have any particular noticable speed problems. In fact the only time we do is when its VM's fault!

I have the Linksys WRT54G router, and it usually has response times of <1ms (less than one millisecond), so you really shouldn't get any latency problems. As for bandwidth, it wont effect that at all.
I have two computers and an Xbox 360 upstairs, connected to the router (which is downstairs) by a long Ethernet cable (simply because I don't want to play games wirelessly). There's a computer downstairs which connects to the router, and two laptops which connect wireless. The router then connects to the modem with an Ethernet cable, and whoosh, I'm online.
