Re: Connecting VGA Cable to Xbox 360 Prem and no sound

VGA is graphics only. There should be a separate connector system for audio?

I don't think there is though Rob (will have to check later on my XBOX) Unless you still have to use the component leads for sound still.

Re: Connecting VGA Cable to Xbox 360 Prem and no sound

i can concur that the red and white are for sound, make sure your VGA cable is plugged into your component input Red/Green/Blue on your TV and normally within the same perameter there should be space to plug in the red and white, i made a similar mistake when i first installed my xbox 360, and plugged the red and white into the sockets to the side and not the ones linked to the component Red,Green and Blue inputs. Dont forget to alter your 360 to either 1080i or if equipped 1080p after you have installed the cables correctly, if your tv doesnt support 1080 then you may find 720p better quality.

Ps if all else fails get a high def cable its an all in one solution as long as your system is compatible that is.

The 360's VGA cable will not plug into red/green/blue component inputs - it's a VGA lead.

Next to the TV's VGA socket, there should be a little socket for a 3.5mm stereo audio jack. The 360's VGA cable has red & white RCA jacks for stereo audio, & should come with a little adaptor to give a 3.5mm stereo jack if necessary.

If using VGA for the 360, the video options available are PC-style resolutions (1280x720, 1360x768, 1920x1080, etc.), rather than "720p", "1080i", "1080p".

For a VGA connection with the 360, it's best to set the 360 to the closest resolution that matches the TV's native resolution.

e.g. my Samsung has a native resolution of 1366x768, so I use the 1360x768 res. on my 360.

Re: Connecting VGA Cable to Xbox 360 Prem and no sound

your absolutely right matt d, ive not come across this type of connection before, i pressumed incorrectly that the cable you refered to was in fact the same type as mine, sorry if this caused confusion. does the vga cable give any improvement over the av/hd component cable.

I don't think it does for general use, although I am told (I can't check this myself, I don't have an HDTV) that the scaling on DVD playback through the Xbox is better using a VGA cable.

AFAIK, the general opinion (at least looking around forums) seems to be...

HDMI > VGA > Component

I much prefer VGA to component. Didn't really find HDMI much better than VGA though, plus I don't have any spare ports for the 360 anyway.

VGA, to me, seems a lot sharper than component. Looks much better IMO.

Apparently using VGA means you get 1:1 pixel mapping & no overscan, unlike with component (although I guess that depends on your panel).

Re. resolutions, DVD upscaling, etc...

If you use component:

Games can be played up to 1080p

HD DVDs can be played up to 1080i [AACS restrictions]

DVDs can be played at standard def. progressive scan (480p/576p) [CSS restrictions]

If you use VGA -or- HDMI:

Games can be played up to 1080p

HD DVDs can be played up to 1080p

DVDs can be played upscaled up to 1080p.

Have you connected the red & white RCA jacks to the correct audio input on the back of the TV?

Are you sure you haven't connected them to the audio inputs for the Component connection on the TV? (left & right audio inputs next to the Red/Green/Blue component video inputs).

The VGA socket should have its own audio input. On my TV, it uses a little 3.5mm stereo jack input. The audio leads on the VGA cable plug into this input via an adaptor that came with the cable.

Re: Connecting VGA Cable to Xbox 360 Prem and no sound

I have the VGA cable but connect the audio using the optical output to my surround amp.

Is it the official cable or a mad catz one? I think the official one came with an adaptor to convert the red and white to the 3.5mm connector but the mad catz and others don't, you can pick them up in Maplin pretty cheaply.

The reson that you are connecting the red and white to the TV and getting no sound is on the TV they are part of a different connector and do not have anything to do with the VGA socket.
