Blu-Ray On Xbox360
News on CVG reports:- http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=198963
Quote:
According to a report in the hardware press, Microsoft is set to announce plans for an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360.
According to the report, Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp has picked up a contract to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Xbox 360. A price of $100 - $150 is being suggested, although the story says this number is "rumor".
Microsoft's short-lived flirtation with Blu-ray rival HD-DVD was widely seen as a tactical move against Sony's Blu-ray drive; one that failed to stem Blu-ray's victory over the rival format.
Now Microsoft is seeking to bridge a gap between its machine and PS3, by offering Blu-ray as a relatively inexpensive add-on for Xbox 360. Edge is chasing Microsoft for a comment.

Re: Blu-Ray On Xbox360
Following on from my above post it looks like Blu-ray will never happen on the current xbox360/or as an add-on.
Why? See here:- http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/...greenberg.aspx

I was able to grab a few minutes with Aaron Greenberg (BIGVIP) at the end of the day today here at TGS to discuss what we announced and how things are going in Japan. We also (try to) put to bed the rumors about Blu-Ray coming to the Xbox 360 (it’s not.)

Re: Blu-Ray On Xbox360
What would be the point? Who actually cares about Blu-ray. I've got a PS3 and I've bought 1 bluray disc on ebay and rented about 5. They are too expensive to buy and if you go into Blockbuster which is part owned by Sony, you'll find there are sod all movies in stock to rent. When you do rent one the staff have to point out it's a bluray disc to make sure you know what it is and have a player lol. It's not until you have a bluray player that you realise it's the emporers new clothes of technology, something that isn't really needed, absolutely pointless, but everybody acts like it's the mutts nuts.

It is when you consider that you can get DVDs from £5 now, even in the shops. OK, they may not be the latest chart releases, but not everyone wants those.
While I am a blu ray fan (looks brilliant on my PC), most people (in my experience) are not really concerned with the extra quality, so probably don't see why they should pay £20-£30 to get a film they can get on DVD for £10.

I don't look that's the point. I know full well you can get them for less than on the high street by looking online, but I now chose not to buy movies. A DVD is perfectly fine, and I rent those. I've learnt through having an extensive DVD collection that apart from the odd one or two, most purchased movies get 1 or 2 plays, so why bother buying in the first place. I'm going to sell/trade in my DVD collection to clear up some space and I'm not going to be buying a huge amount of either DVD or Blu-Ray from now on. Better things to do with my money thanks.
I stand by my statement that blu-ray is an expensive waste. I doubt it will take off in the way DVDs did. The leap from VHS to DVD was huge and noticeable to everyone. Apart from the quality leap, you had the physical durability of the disc improvement and the space-saving for movie collections. The leap from DVD to Blu-Ray is there, but it's not as big and to me, not worth the extra expense. Outdoor scenes on Blu-Ray, yes nice improvement in visual quality, inside scenes, not much. Hardly worth bothering with to be honest and those who say you cen get loads more extras on them, wow, I think I may have watched the extras on maybe 3 or 4films in total. It was used as an enticement by Sony to buy the PS3, but now a lot of people have them, is everyone rushing out to buy/rent Blu-Rays? Nope. Every time I have been in Blockbuster, both at my parents and my local one, nobody else has been looking at the Blu-Rays, absolutely nobody.

Well, obviously old DVDs at reduced prices will be cheaper than Blu-ray Discs.
New DVDs often still retail at £15-20 though, & the same movies can be usually be bought on BD for the same price, rather than £20-£30.
Although HMV & others tend to take the mickey with their BD prices, ASDA can be quite cheap & there are plenty of easy-to-find bargains online (Sendit.com, Amazon.co.uk, etc.).
I've never even paid £20 for a BD, let alone £25 or £30.

So actually they're not too expensive to buy, you just choose not to buy any movies now?
While you, & others, choose not to buy, and are happy with renting, there are still plenty of people who do buy movies.
While I agree that the leap from DVD to BD is not as great as the leap from VHS to DVD, it is still a definite difference in quality.
Although you do not think it is enough of a difference in quality to justify the "extra expense", I disagree as do plenty of others.
[Besides, I maintain that there is no "extra expense" if you're buying new films, rather than things which have long since been reduced in price on DVD].

I choose not to buy them now, but I still think they are too expensive. Not everyone searches out the greatest bargains and plans months ahead. Many people buy films on the spur of the moment while browsing in a high street shop and Blu-ray are stupidly expensive anywhere but a few internet outlets.

Re: Blu-Ray On Xbox360
Don't need to hunt them out, or plan months ahead.
Too expensive... only in places like HMV etc.
New ones are under £20 in ASDA, comparable in price to the same movies on DVD.
Amazon (somewhere I'd think a lot of people have heard of) tend to have good deals on, & also regularly have a "3 for 2" offer running (which currently contains a whole load of movies).
etc.

You think £15+ is an acceptable amount for a movie on a blu-ray disc when you can get the same on a dvd for maybe half the price or less?

No contest. Anyone who can't see that Blu-Ray aren't expensive form the above comparison is off their rocker.

Re: Blu-Ray On Xbox360
The prices are all messed up at the moment with blu ray titles that came out a while ago still high prices, and also recent releases still naturally high. The good thing though is that upcoming releases seem to be going down. Ive got the dark knight preordered for a tenner. I would like the shawshank redemption to come down in price, but that seems stuck at £14+.

Re: Blu-Ray On Xbox360
have to agree, the 360 doesn't need a blu ray player , it a games console and is doing extremely well without , i have a ps3 and have never even had a blu ray disc (movie disc) in it !!. 360 has much more going for it games wise imo , forget the blu ray player , if you want one they will be cheap enough in a stand alone version soon anyway .

Yes.
But then, I am off my rocker
I don't see a problem with £15...
£20, yes. £25, yes. £30, yes.
But £15? What's wrong with £15?
I remember when DVDs first came out.... £20 or more for a crappy bare-bones double-sided "flipper" disc...
As I said before, obviously older films will be cheaper on DVD than brand new films.
I have no problem with paying £15 for a movie, if it's gonna have better picture & sound quality.
Each to their own...

More expensive: Yes.
Too expensive to buy: Not IMO.
Hulk is the only one of those that's brand new, and it's only a fiver difference.
An example of something not yet out (Play.com again):
The Dark Knight - DVD: £11.99
The Dark Knight - BD - £14.99
3 quid extra. Big deal.

I agree there's little point in MS releasing a BD drive for the 360.
They couldn't use one for games (as it'd fracture the userbase), plus they consider downloads to be the future for movies etc.
