3 red lights
Hi all,
I have 3 red lights on my XBOX and it doesn't boot up, any ideas what this is and how I go about fixing it? Is this a hardware fault? If so should I contact Microsoft or the company that sold me the XBOX

Red Ring of Death!!!!!
If you've had it for less than 3 years, you should be able to get Microsoft to repair it for free - try this link:

Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534?sd=xbox which gives you some simple diagnostics you can follow.
However, you should be aware that the 3 red lights thing is a known problem with xboxs (and is covered by a 3 year warranty rather than the normal one year one), and you'll probably need to send it to Microsoft to get repaired (you need to apply either by phone or online to do this).

If its less than a year old, your covered by the Sale of goods act and your contract is with the place you bought it from who should offer you a replacement as its not fit for purpose.
This is as opposed to sending it to microsoft who take a few weeks.
Dont take any crap from them, they should replace it.

That happened to mine when it died, i'm pretty sure it will stop working altogether soon.
I would follow the above advice and phone Microsoft if i was you.

My wife tried the 0800 given on the website, she had a ringing tone for about 10 mins then got an engaged tone!!!!

Hi Fred,
If you go to the link I put up (and probably Stuarts as well), it will ask you to put your serial number in, a few personal details, and then you can fill in what fault your 360 has. It will also ask if you have the 3 red lights - if you answer yes, you can get the console replaced / repaired under the extended 3 year guarantee.
I'm just waiting to receive my shipping parcel, so that I can send the console for repair, so it should be worth you trying that.

My son had the same problem with his 360. I was a bit worried, as he had purchased it on ebay. He just followed the suggestions as described above, packed it into an old cardboard box, UPS came and collected it and delivered a working machine a couple of weeks later.

Since the X360 was only launched in America / Canada on 22nd november 2005, All X360's are less than 3 years old!!
UK was 2nd December 2005

Which is by the by if it wasn't the red ring of death, because Fred could still have had it for 2 years and be outside the original warranty  .
However, seeing as Microsoft have extended the warranty for this particular issue, I was technically correct

Just got the red ring of death on my 360 for the second time 
It's probably a good thing seeing that theres only 6 months or so of the free repair for red ring of death left. Hopefully this time i get a console that will last.

I'd say 'unlucky' but this problem is expected - is your console one of the older makes?

Yes it's one of the older ones, i must have had this one for about 18 months or so after my launch one broke. I need to try and find a box that it fit's in now to send it off
