Angry Xbox live and old Ntl USB modem

Son got an Xbox 360 for Xmas. Have been trying to get connected to Xbox Live but no joy. I have the IP address, Subnet mask and Default Gateway info. There are 3 possible connections in the Network connections tab: Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network connection, this is disabled. The 2nd is Local Area connection 3( old Ntl 120 USB Modem), this is also disabled. The last connection is a 1394 Connection Net Adapter which is connected. On testing the Live connection I get the following message: Gateway address is not valid. Verify IP settings for this network configuration. The test confirms the console has a valid IP adress. The Status Report Codes are as follows: W: 0000-000B X: 8000-040D Y: 0000-0000 Z: 0000-0000.

My ISP is Virgin Media.
I don't know what the static/dynamic thing is.

Again for the DNS static/dynamic thing is don't know.

I apparently don't need PPPoE settings from the ISP

I am trying to connect directly to my modem via an ethernet cable.

The modem is an old Ntl 120 version.

Have been trying to connect since Christmas. This is a consistent problem.

PLEASE HELP AT MY WITS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have you the computer plugged in using usb and the x-box plugged in through the ethernet, if this is the case it will not work with both plugged in , if you are using the modem plugged into the computer and then an ethernet connection to the 360 you need to turn on internet connection sharing , give a bit more info on how you are connecting the console and hopefully will have you connected in no time

Re: Xbox live and old Ntl USB modem

have the console connected to the modem with the ethernet cable supplied with the console. The modem is connected to pc using a USB cable. tried to bridge connections but couldn't get it to work. Possibly got lost and confused along the way!!!!!!! Don't really have a clue what I'm doing. thought I could just plug and play so to speak.

Re: Xbox live and old Ntl USB modem

You can only connect either the USB or the ethernet at any one time - not both at the same time. You only have one IP address & the modem cannot share it.

You need to power cycle the modem in between changing connections.

THis is an old sticky I wrote ages ago, but it should still be pretty relevant:

Make sure the network settings on the Xbox are on auto for IP & DNS.

Really, it'd be a lot easier with a router. No swapping cables, no rebooting the modem, PC & Xbox can be online at the same time.
