Exclamation Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

Hi there

Has anyone managed getting onto xbox live using the Virgin Media(old NTL) set top box. What do I need to do? I thought as the box was both the cable tv and modem combined that I would just have to plug it straight into mhy Xbox, but it won't work, Either the I.P address fails or its something else.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I've been waiting for what seems like a lifetime to get started on live.

jojo

One thing you will need to do is switch off everything - then switch on the cable box then switch on the xbox in that order. If you have any problems post back. Welcome to the forum by the way!

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

i dont know if its still the same, but you used to have to manually register your MAC adress for your PC device on the VM internal web system when using the STBs internal CM at one time, the stand alone VM-CMs dont need manual registering.

if its still the case, you might need to take the xboxs MAC, clone that into your working PCs ethernet connection and register it that way to fool the VM end, then later (after you see a working web connection with the cloned xbox MAC on the PC)revert your PCs MAC back to its original and all should be good perhaps.

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

Thanks for the welcome. Turning the modem/set top box and then the console on in that order has gotten me further than before, but now it says that my MTU has failed and I have no idea how to change it. I'm not even sure if I can change it on the set top box?Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

I think what you need to do is what they call 'spoofing the mac address'

You need to find the mac address of your PC and put that into your xbox system settings. Leave all other settings on automatic and then go through the process of switching everything off as before. Switch on cable box wait for it to be fully on, then switch on your xbox and connect.

---------- Post added at 18:40 ---------- Previous post was at 18:23 ----------

Do you know how to get the mac address from your PC?

In XP, If you go to Start then run then type in cmd then type in ipconfig/all

I think it should say the physical address and in a format like 00-12-M1-12-12-12 for example.

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

Hmmmm, like i said above, the xbox's MAC isnt registered with VM apparently, thats why when you cloned(spoofed) the working PCs MAC into the xbox it worked as expected.

like i said, some time you might want to clone the xboxs MAC to the PC and get it registered sometime.

BUT if you ever want to get both on the net at the same time so as not to need power cycling the CM and swapping RJ45 cables every time, then a simple and cheap (wireless)router will then be your main device connected to the VM_CM and the pc and xbox will be pluged into the routers LAN ports.

thats were having two devices with the same MAC will be a problem, and you will need to reset the xbox back to its default MAC

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

sorry about that popper, I missed your comment before. Thanks for the advice as well. I have an old router in the house a mate gave me, so i'll give it a shot. I think I'm gonna have to, i've only been on live for a few hours and I'm pretty much hooked already.
Thanks again guys.

Re: Trying to get on XBL with Virgin Media Set Top Box Modem. HELP!!!!

make sure that old router is infact a router and not a switch.

the difference is a router has an ip address and a CPU inside that as you might expect, routes the WAN side port traffic that connects to the VM-CM in your case, to and from the LAN ports on its LAN side that gives out valid LAN IPs to any connected devices you have connected for instance.

wereas as a switch is passive and has no CPU to run these apps, its for plugiing into a routers LAN ports and expanding these LAN side ports for adding more devices, common for older devices that have only 1 WAN port and 1 LAN side port for instance, tell us the exact model of router you have and we can tell you if it is infact a router or switch...

Thank you very much. I'm glad you are now up and running on xbox live. I can't take all the credit as I've learnt what I know from the very people who frequent Cable Forum over the years.

ADSL - thats for Broadband that comes from your local telephone exchange, owned by BT, through a Fixed Line Access. Its not the same for cable broadband.

You will need a cable broadband router most people here recommend the Linksys WRT54G router but there are others. Check out xbox.com for a list of there approved routers with xbox live. The WRT54G, you can pick these up fairly cheaply and you can use them for either a wired or wireless connection.

A wireless network means less cables but can work out more expensive, you would have to buy the microsoft official wireless adapter for your xbox360 which are around sixty pounds. I use this myself.

Don't know mate. All I can recommend is what I use, maybe others memebers have some thoughts on the matter? Keep checking and posting.
