There have been reports of XBox Live issues over the last couple of weeks. Some suggest that a sudden increase in XBox users over Christmas may be straining the current capacity.
There are problems with Xbox Live at the moment. Major Nelson latest blog reads this:-

Microsoft have officially ruined Christmas!
The problems on XBL have made it nigh on impossible to get into any games over christmas
and as such have made it soo awful that I'm off to join a convent instead... lol
(cant spell monastry & a convent willbe more fun - lol)
