Gears Of War - Firewall problem
I don't know whether this is because of the last update to GoW/Xbox360 but for some strange reason I cannot set up any multi-player games. It comes up with a 'check your firewall settings' error message. Anyone had or know of this problem and more importantly how to correct it? I've input port forwarding for xbox on XP firewall, any other suggestions?

Re: Gears Of War - Firewall problem
Weren't you hosting on Tuesday night though? Or has there been another update?
Nothing changed at all with your set-up?
How's the 360 connected, Neon? Router, or Internet Connection Sharing via the PC? If it's via a router, then you don't need to input any xbox port settings on the XP firewall - the XBL won't be going via the PC.

Re: Gears Of War - Firewall problem
The update that was released last week (i think) had better connection support or summin like that where it detects your NAT settings and only lets you host a game if you have open or moderate. If youve been hosting after you got the update then as usual im probably wrong.

Hi Matt / deathtrap3000
Nothing has been changed with my set up. The Xbox360 uses the official wireless adapter and the router is is the Linksys wireless-G broadband model WRT54G. I've run a system test on the xbox360 and I think deathtrap3000 post mentioning the NAT might be to blame as the setting now shows STRICT whereas before it was OPEN. Don't know why this has reverted back to STRICT ? Any thoughts or opinions greatfully appreciated as always.
One other thing, as you know we have two xbox360's in the house and the other one seems to be working ok for hosting GoW games.
EDIT Just had a play around in the router settings. I did a test first on xbox360 which showed NAT as strict. Changed the UnP setting on the router to disabled then ran another test on the xbox360 which then showed the NAT as Moderate. Went back to the router and changed the UnP back to enabled and retested the xbox360 and the NAT now shows OPEN
Problem now solved but why the hell is the NAT setting on the xbox360 jumping around so much before I changed anything?

fwiw my router (a Netgear) occasionally stops responding to upnp requests - quick reboot normally sorts it out. Not sure if yours will have this but my router has a upnp connection status page in the configuration pages so you can actually see the Xbox opening ports up, say, when you do a connection test. If the ports aren't opening when I do this then I just give it a quick 3 pronged reset.

Hi Uncle Peter
I tried the 'three prong' reset last night but got no joy with that. I suppose I'll just have to put it down to one of those 'weird' and 'wonderful' things that PC's do from time to time!

Re: Gears Of War - Firewall problem
Crap, Crap, Crap! My copy of Gears Of War is now a coffee mat. A small scratch appeared on it and refused to play the single player save I had at that point. Switched the xbox off in disgust. Later switched the xbox back on with Gears still in the tray and a nice grinding noise could be heard - the game disc is now useless. Bugger!

Don't think so.. my first copy of Gears wouldn't play right and I took that back for the copy I have (had) now. Tried a disc repair kit for the scratch but no joy with that either (waste of £20) think the crap you put on the disc to repair it (followed the instructions to the letter by the way) made it unstable for the disc tray/ reader so that might have contributed to the coffee mat I have now.

Re: Gears Of War - Firewall problem
Ugh... Is it a scratch around the circumference like the drive transport mechanism has caused it?
Not that it helps you right now but I did read somewhere that some instances of discs being scratched can be avoided by ensuring they aren't in the drive when you power the system up.

Nope! Had it too long and there's coffee stains on the disc now.

I'll remember that in future.

It was a curved scratch but it didn't go around the circumference of the disc, the scatch was less than half of an inch in length.
