360 doesn't connect with PC over a router

I have been trying to connect my 360 with the PC via Netgear WGR614 V4 router. This router is not in the list of routers officially supported by XBox but it is also not in the list of unsupported routers, so I'm hoping that it should work.

The PC and XBox both are hard wired in the router ports. The windows media connect on the PC can see the 360 however the zune software cannot. When I test the connection on 360 it gets the IP but cannot find the PC. If I connect the 360 directly with the PC then it fails while attempting to retrive the IP.

Any tips or ideas !!!

Re: 360 doesn't connect with PC over a router

So you're trying to get the 360 & PC communicating for media sharing & stuff?

What are the network settings on the 360?

Easiest thing for IPs etc is to have the PC & the 360 both set to obtain an IP address (& DNS) automatically, & have the router's DHCP server turned on (to dish out said IPs to the PC & 360).

Does the PC have a software firewall running which could be blocking the 360 from talking to it?

For streaming with Windows Media Connect, I believe both the "Universal Plug n Play Device Host" & "SSDP Discovery Service" need to be enabled & set to Automatic in the "Services" tool (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services).

Are you using the newer version of Windows Media Connect?

Have you tried Windows Media Player 11? It works quite well for streaming to the 360, & removes the need to use Windows Media Connect (as it's built-in to WMP11). [still need to ensure those services are enabled & Auto though, plus the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service]

I have no idea about the Zune.

I'll try the Windows Media Player. I tried turning the firewall off but 360 couldn't see the PC.

I had the same problem but it was not through a router.

btw Zune has EXACTLY the same media sharing code as WMP11 plus it's only for USA atm lol

I phoned Xbox support and they told me a simple solution... Go to your dashboard, go to the System tab, Select Compuers, find your Computer and disconnect it.

it should work when you reconnect it, this is AFTER configuring media sharing to allow Xbox 360 access to the PC
