for every 64k of ul you can host 1.5 people, with 200k you should be ok with around 6-8 people, 384 gets you 8-10 and 12 needs alot closer to 700 to be lag free. different game modes requires different amounts of ul speeds, but most people have between 768 and 1 meg conection to host 12 in gr.
Things is tho m8, noone is gonna have an upload of over 256k in the UK (well, hardly anyone at all).

NTL 150k broadband: 150k download, 64k upload.

NTL 600k broadband: 600k download, 128k upload.

NTL 1meg broadband: 1meg download, 256k upload.

Telewest 512k: 512k down, 128k up.

Telewest 1meg: same as NTL

512k ADSL (BT, Demon, etc): 512k down, 256k up.

So, realistically, the most players anyone could host in one of the XBox FPS (GR, RtCW, etc) is 8, if they have 1meg cable or 512k ADSL (as they'd have a 256k upload).

Although it does depend on the game.

Counterstrike doesn't seem quite as demanding as GR/GRIT/RtCW.

PGR2 can handle 8 players on a 128k upload (NTL 600k service).

MGP can, as BoxMaster said, handle quite a few players even on just the 150k service.
