Speed Issues - Dont We All

Hi Guys (and Women)

Ive been having some issues with my connection recently. My download rate is averaging <1Mb and my uploads are fine 400kb. As you probably noticed im on the 4Mb service from ntl.

I ran several speed tests and i have recorded a great deal of packet loss which i got a friend to run aswell on ntl im my area and he was spot on, while i still get packet loss and lagg that would make you go crazy.

I spoke to a friend and he looked at my power levels and they are "within tollerance" but no more. Off-hand they were about 0.3db (nearly perfect) and a snr of about 28ish (jumps between 27 and 30).

He suggested that becuase my modem is up the loft (large run of coax) i plug it into the feed coming into the house directly. As is stands, i have the modem connected directly to the feed coming into the house (nothing else on it) and have a run of Cat5 running to my router. My snr still jumps constantly between 27ish to 30ish and my power level jumped to around 12ish when i moved the modem.

For the sake of any router queries, i am presenty running it directly off my network card in the pc.

I cant paste the output from the speed report unless i register it. My current power levels are:Downstream Receive Power Level : 12.65 dBmvDownstream SNR : 28.20 dBUpstream Transmit Power Level : 42.00 dBmv

Just to add, ran this test aswell. Here are the results:

2nd 512K took 8500 ms = 60.2 KB/sec, approx 496 Kbps, 0.48 Mbps
3rd 512K took 7688 ms = 66.6 KB/sec, approx 549 Kbps, 0.54 Mbps
4th 512K took 3203 ms = 159.9 KB/sec, approx 1318 Kbps, 1.29 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1010 Kbps, 0.99 Mbps

Those original levels arn't just within tolerances they're spot on mate, your new ones though are well out I would suggest that you put the modem back in the loft. Its not unusual for the SNR to fluctuate and it shouldnt really be causeing you any problems until it drops below about 25. It may be though that while the modem levels are ok the general network levels arn't but when the service tech visits he should check that anyway.

TBH there may be nothing that the service tech can do for you so if he can't find anything wrong pester him to pass it onto the local network engineers, I would also get him to confirm with Swansea that theres no downstream congestion on your uBR.
