Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
This post I will start of with some gratitude.
Thank you to Jill at ntl and to the cableforum team for getting me reupgraded I am now back on the top tier and happy again
Concerning the speeds, earlier around 6pm just after I was fixed my speeds on adslguide were what the modem can do around 4.5mbit, but I noticed ftp and http getting very low (lower then what I had on 2mbit) so I did another speedtest and got around 1.5mbit, I am not going to moan a big deal about this tho for 2 main reasons.
(1) We need to remember this is still in trial phase as classified by ntl and so they know and expect things to improve.
(2) I am seeing tons of maintenance notices on the ntl status page for my area so when these stop appearing I will review my situation again and see if its better.
I think I read on another thread or forum that ntl are garantueeing 3mbit burst (after the trial) and speeds are only upto 10mbit will will probably be in quiet periods of the day, and even I do not expect 10mbit speeds all day every day. For that kind of service one should expect to be paying a 4 figure sum each month.
They appear to be doing some shaping which is good as ssh isnt lagging too much for me, and pings are fairly stable as well it is just throughput.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Has anyone in Belfast got an actual speed higher than 3mb yet? I got the upgrade on the 8th, but i'm still seeing about 2.7mb max.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I just phoned again and got "Yea sure give me a minute" ... waits a few mins on hold ... "Ok you should have 10mb now just restart your modem. So I restarted my modem while he stayed on the phone. It didn't work, I was still on 3mb. "Oh sorry, you can't get it yet. You will have to stay on 3mb".
Now to be honest I was in shock at this point. Why do non of the CSR's know what they are talking about? I mean seriously, every single one gives a different answer! As well as the above I have had:
Not available at all
Not available in my area
New customers only
Trial only and you can't join it
Ah well, off to work!

I've had the exact same problem. I rang CS and explained and they sorted the change over straight away. Got an engineer coming sometime this morning to install a SACM.

I'm not disagreeing with you on the fact that we would all like the new speed, sure. But some of us are capable of comprehending the criteria put down by NTL. The only confusion that has arisen is due to overzealous customers who can't wait longer the about 2.2 seconds before bombarding customer services followed by venting their anguish on here with tails of "It's my right to have it….", "It's so not fair…", "NTL are the very essence of evil...yadda yadda...".
What I am finding so hard to comprehend is why is it so difficult too wait a month of so? Going by some of the comments on here regarding inconsistent speeds it wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Face it; NTL cs is a complete shambles.
I'm in Cambridge and on the 1Meg for £17.99. I called on Saturday and asked to be put on the 10Meg. The woman said "sure I'll do that for you now" when i asked to make sure there wouldn't be a price increase, she told me that would be £37.99. I explained that i'd heard that if i have a 3Gig cap (or some low cap) on the 10 Meg then there would be no price increase. She puzzled over this and then asked me to hold. She came back and said "right that's all done for you". I asked her to confirm there would be no price increase and that I would still be paying £17.99. She confirmed this was the case.
My suspicions began when I finished the call by asking if i needed to reboot my modem, and she said there was no need. I lost all connection over the next 15 mins or so, so turned off the computer and modem. When i turned it on again, the connection was back. Aha I though, this will be my new higher speed. I'd just like to point out at this point that I've got the NTL home 100 cable modem, so wasn't really expecting the full 10Meg, more like 4 or 5Meg. No chance - my speed was exactly the same as before. i.e 1 Meg connection (i checked the modem settings) with a max speed of about 740k.
I called cs back and got some sarky Scottish kid. Who, on telling him i'd checked my speed witha variety of speed checkers, laughed and said all speed checkers were a load of rubbish. I explained that while I know they are not that accurate i should at least see some speed increase going from a 1 to 10 Meg connection. This seemed to confuse him and he responded by saying I've only been upgraded to the 3Meg connection!!! I then asked him why my cable modem still said it was set to a 1Meg connection, and he said he could send an engineer round but if they found out my modem wasn't faulty they would charge me 50 quid!! I explained to him this was unacceptable and I wasn't saying my modem was faulty i was pointing out that I hadn't been upgraded at all, depite their insistance that I had. Utterly stumped, he then transferred me to Techniccal Support. I got through to some woman who sounded like she was on the moon, but who i suspect was in America. She took my MAC address and confirmed that I hadn't been upgraded at all and that my modem was still set to 1 Meg. She suggested I waited a few hours as the upgrade may take a while to come through.
It's now Tuesday and I am still waiting for the upgrade I was told had been done for me. I'm still on a 1Meg connection and still only gettting speeds of about 740k.
NTL cs haven't a clue what they are talking about. Unfortuantely I've been with them for a few years and have had nothing but problems everytime i speak to them. It amazes me how they are allowed to continue to tade.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
PS what's the betting I'm now paying £37.99 for the privilege of spending hours going through this rubbish, with the outcome being that I am still on my existing 1Meg connection, never getting anything higher than about 740k.

There are only 2 possibilities here... either the CS representative you spoke to thought you wanted to upgrade to the top tier 3/10mbit in which case you will now be on £37 a month.
Or, you are still on 1mbit and £17 a month.
The 10mbit rollout for the lower two tiers is not until next year, so moving from 1mbit to 10 is impossible without paying the top tier price and upgrading.

Well, I'm not in CS ... but I have it from a good source there will be such a tariff once everyone is migrated to 10meg. Service will be based on download limits rather than bandwidth. Don't know how the CSR in this case managed to set it up like that today though, I suspect someone got confused over the details of an internal briefing. It wouldn't be the first time!

you wont be getting your upgrade for a while unless your willing to pay for it, no matter what youve heard....just read through this thread a bit & you wil see that the only people who are getting the upgrade are those that either willing to pay for it ( go onto the top tier £37.99 ) or those already on the top tier, & some are those are having difficutly in getting it...
Yes, There is only 1 tariff available at the moment for the 10mb service.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Just rang up ntl cs to ask them about my 4mbps download speed as opposed to the 10mbps speed i should be getting and the guy on the phone said the speeds should be more accurate come or after december the 1st when im presuming they automatically roll the 10mbps service out so all looks good here.

But as far as current tariffs go, 10meg @ £17.99 doesn't exist, does it?
