Ntl Home:120 speed issues is this normal?

Hi people,

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this in but after spending an hour with the search button, Im still lost

Upgraded my ntl account to the 10mb package today. All morning consistantly getting about 4mb downstream 497kb upstream. Now I realise its UPTO 10meg but I thought what the hell Ill give the guys at NTL a ring and find out, they say my signal strength is fine and that I should have the latest firmware, which according to the guy has been out since around august.

If I give you guys my settings can you tell me if I have a problem or that all is fine and that hopefully as the NTL guy said it will improve as the network is upgraded over the next month. To be fair he did say if first week of Jan its still around 4meg to phone back.

Downstream Recieve power level:- -12.88 dBmv
Downstream SNR:- 29.81dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level: consistanly since upgrade of speed 59.50dBmv

MAX Downstream:-10240000bps
Max Upstream:-512000bps

Software Upgrade File Name:- ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr

Be nice if someone with a ntlhome:120 with decent speeds could compare software upgrade filenames with me and see if theres is different.

Thanks for reading thread.

BTW the NTL Guy assured me he could see my signal levels and if anything there were more than is needed...

Go to microsoft.com and download anything (anti spyware) for example. You should get at least 1mb a sec. I have only managed to get full speed on there as most normal sites limit their speed somewhat lower.

HTH

You may need to upgrade to the NTL 250 modem, give NTL a call.

well, a few seconds with the search button (searching for your modem config file name) produced this:

Wakar has your modem, your config file, and 10Mb ... so I would suspect something else is the matter.

Do you have a router in your set-up? Some older routers can't handle 10Mb.

Re: Ntl Home:120 speed issues is this normal?

Im not using a router im using the usb connection with usb2 drivers installed. I tried the ethernet socket but it says nothing is plugged in and the ethernet modem light doesnt come on. Im going to get another cat5 cable just incase my old one has a break in, course it could be the mobo socket or the modem socket, who knows.....

And yes im a silly newb who didnt think of searching for the filename

Thats your problem then. Cat 5 cable should work perfectly

You will need to reset your modem after installing it and setup your internet settings again.

wow even my area gets 1.31mb/sec I wonder tho if its just a bad proxy, I would try cycling proxies before panicking.

Re: Ntl Home:120 speed issues is this normal?

I have good news and bad news

Good news:- I got the ethernet cable working Modem now tests at 7.9meg
Bad News:- Turns out the ethernet socket on the ntl modem is dodgy, if you REALLY push the cable in the light suddenly lights up. Ive tried both ends of cable so its not the cable. Should they replace modem with a dodgy ethernet socket if the usb socket still works?

Yes, they should. For all they know you may have no spare USB ports on your machine. Call it in as a fault.
