Have you tried removing it from within windows safe mode?

To get into safe mode, press F8 when you restart your PC, just before the usual windows logos come up.. It should take you to a menu where safe mode is an option.

Re: ethernet to usb adaptor wont unistall
You shouldn't need any ntl install software if you are using ethernet. you only need that if you are using USB, as the USB drivers are not standard windows.
When you change connection from the USB to ethernet, or vice versa, you must switch off the power to the modem, leave off for say 30 seconds, then power on the modem, let that settle and only then boot up the PC. Only the ethernet, or, the USB cable can be plugged into the modem, not both.

Re: ethernet to usb adaptor wont unistall
Clear out all the ntl stuff, get eh PC nice and clean again so you can start afresh. Rebooting the modem and booting up the PC normally with ethernet plugged in should be enough to get the connection up and running.

Re: ethernet to usb adaptor wont unistall
jamieb, be careful what you uninstall - are you trying to uninstall your USB controllers and hubs, or are you trying to uninstall your modem?
You _don't_ want to uninstall your USB controllers and hubs (well, actually, it probably wouldn't be that bad. They should reinstall automatically on reboot).
AFAIK you should have an entry in Add/Remove Programs (not Device Manager) for your modem's USB drivers (not sure about this - never used USB to connect to a modem) - that's where to remove it. Once you uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, the entry for it in Device Manager should be removed automatically - if you try to uninstall it in Device Manager, it will probably reinstall on reboot.
