Re: Virgin Media SuperHub 'upgrade' hangs up on IP phone punters

it makes me laugh. Normally when a company gets negative publicity they kiss ass and try to save face but it looks like VM don't care at all. I was expecting a statement saying "we are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue asap"

Re: Virgin Media SuperHub 'upgrade' hangs up on IP phone punters

that is media speak for "yeah people have been moaning their asses off but we couldn't care less and we might get round to fixing it in the next firmware update and that will be whenever we feel like it".

If they were taking it seriously they would have fixed it by now.

You are making the assumption that they actually have a clue how to fix such issues on the Superhub. History of fix times for other problems suggests that is a very big assumption.

Of course the cynic would suggest that as their phone charges are so high it isn't in their interests to have VOIP work.

The even bigger cynic might suggest it could equally be that their competence didn't stretch to screwing it up for all VOIP as, like I said earlier, mine works fine.

So, how is "We are aware of issues with using VoIP and are looking into them." (which is what they said) any worse than "we are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue asap" (which is what you appear to think they should say)? Both are just vague statements that they are working on the problem.

Also, if they were taking it seriously, they wouldn't rush into a fix, then roll it out to millions (or at least hundreds of thousands) of users without spending time testing it.

Like they did with r36 which is a complete success

It would seem that they must have done just that with R36 as nobody was complaining about this problem before that was released. VOIP is hardly some fringe technology - given VM call charges I suspect a lot of customers must use it.

Would you rather they rushed out a fix to this that broke something else because they didn't test it properly?

No, VOIP isn't a fringe technology. It is,however, relatively complex, and not all implementations are entirely standard, which only makes it more complex. It's also worth pointing out that the article says the problem does not affect all VOIP networks.

VM do need to fix the problem, but it may not be as bad as some people here are saying.

Because one is a "can't be arsed" statement and the other is a kiss ass glittery media statement to reassure the public and make them feel better.

that's a joke, if they were taking their responsibilities seriously as an isp only offering 1 piece of cpe and weren't rushing things then we wouldnt have had all the problems with the shub we have had over the last 2 years

Correct. I use VOIP and it isn't a problem at all for me.

What I do criticise is that VM don't seem to be very thorough with their firmware testing. This is far from the first Superhub firmware that has broken commonly used technologies.
