Bexley Overscribed area?

So I have been on 100 meg for a while and not seen anything near the speeds I should get.

Before the speed upgrades I had a rock solid 50 meg connection.

vmng300 shows that I can currently set up for 100meg and 5meg up aswell as my virgin media. Should I now be on 10 meg up too by now as my area has been upgraded?

Finally got through to level 2 support after speaking to the ceo's office.

Anyway where do I stand as I am getting 10-30 meg but rock solid 5 meg up and this is due to the fact that apparently the vast majority of modems in my area are on one channel.

They have logged a call with networks to balance the load and move me onto a different channel but the ceo's office aren't being too responsive or helpful (almost 3 weeks since originally contacting them).

Area is due to be sorted out by September apparently for network issues.

So am I entitled to any money back under ofcom or the like for not receiving the service I am paying for or should I just give up and go down to 30meg?

Re: Bexley Overscribed area?

Going back to 30 meg will probably make things proportionally worse as you'll still be on docsis 3. Try setting up a thinkbroadband monitor and taking snapshots of speedtest.net/london namesco results and using that as evidence.

As always dude you have been told a load of twoddle. The only peeps using 1 channel are those on 10mbit or 20mbit. Anyone above that (30mbit+) is on docsis 3 and will be using the maximum number of channels available/allowed in your area. As an example, if there are 6 channels available in your area everyone using the shub (regardless of tier) will be load balancing across all 6 channels. Anyone using the vmng300 will be load balancing across whatever 4 channels it locks on to. The vmng 300 can only use 4 downstream channels atm but don't let this encourage you to move over to the shub because that is what VM want. If you cant get more than 30mbit from 4 channels you arent going to get much more from the shub.

You won't get 10mbit up until all the upstream upgrade work has been completed. Can you post your power levels. You want the stuff out of the downstream tab and upstream tab.

Re: Bexley Overscribed area?

there in lies your problem dude, downstream power is way too high. You can try ringing tech support and getting an engineer to come out and fix it but if I was you I would do it yourself and then write a letter to the CEOs office moaning your ass off over the appalling support you have had, you have been lied to, the fault was incorrectly diagnosed and you fixed it yourself. You need one of these:

thanks for your prompt reply!

I will order one of those no problem, they do say my area is rather congested though with around 230 modems sharing my channel or the 4 channels?

What levels should my modem read anyway?

Guessing as you have a vmng300 too you are still using the DIR-615? Or should I get something else?

I am guessing far lower than the values i currently have what line should I look at?

Hopefully that will solve the problem and will let you know how I get on!

Thanks again!

Re: Bexley Overscribed area?

I am a massive Linksys fan and have got the E3000. Your downstream power should be between -3 and +7. Whipping 10db off your yours will bring it down to -1 which is good. Can't wait to see the difference it makes to your speed.

Btw, I think the 615 has got 100mbit ports so dont cry if you dont hit 100mbit exactly because you have got to allow for other stuff as well. In long term you want to be looking at a router (not the shub) with gigabit ports.

Hey Maximus,

10db attenuator finally arrived today!

Tried a few torrent downloads from private sites semi stable at around 40-50mb but not being able to get any higher.

speedtest.net reckons I have a 15-20mb connection using various london servers.

Downstream power levels are now:

Power Level
(dBmV) -0.92 -0.07 -0.41 -0.79

Tried various ethernet cables (5e) all under 1 metre long but same speeds. Even tried vmng300 only with no further success.

Tried both a laptop and a desktop pc both with gigabit cards.

Not sure what else to do now? downgrade to 60mb?

Thanks for your tips on routers btw!

Re: Bexley Overscribed area?

major bummer, I was sure that would fix it for you. Have you ever tried using newsgroups? The most I ever get from torrents is 7mb/sec which is around 56mbit. The only time I ever get my full 12mb/sec is from newsgroups. Even if you dont use them normally I would love to see what speed you get for peace of mind so you know whether you can actually achieve the speed or not.

Re: Bexley Overscribed area?

1) That ping monitor shows fairly low congestion. It's fairly close to the best days I've had on VM with over 150Mbps spare capacity on my 200Mbps segment.

2) Torrents (and newsgroups) are traffic shaped. Neither are a reliable method of speed testing.

Try these two sites first thing in the morning:

http://speedtest.uk.net/

http://www.speedtester.bt.com/beta/

Just tested both and these will max out my 50M connection e.g.

only in th evening, and even then I can get 4mb/sec from torrents which I think is quite good. During the day with newsgroups I have always been able to get 12mb/sec until I hit stm
