Download speeds
Hi
I have a 30 Mb fibre optic cable connection but have never been able to download files faster than 1.25 mbps. Is this normal and to be expected? I have done a speed test and that gives a satisfactory result.
Thanks for any replies or advice.

Re: Download speeds
Hi
Thanks for quick response.
The speed test showed 31.358 mbps download and 1.967 mbps updoad - so OK here.
I downloaded gas guzzlers from gamershell at 3.72 mbps. Is this good, bad or just about OK? BTW, I don't normally download games!
Otherwise, I surf very well except during the evenings when everyone here is bashing the system at the same time!

1 - This is how the VM hub came. I have not altered anything.
2 - What should be altered and what should the new data be?
3 - How and where do I make these alterations?
Please bear in mind that I do not have technical knowledge regarding configuring wireless routers.
Many thanks for any advice.

Re: Download speeds
upstream is just in levels as well
they should be from -3 to +7
you dont need to do nothing for now
just go and post in this section the same statistics and also mention nights the speed is less
open here the same thread here
http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...band/bd-p/30mb
they will book you an engineer to sort it out
it take 3-6 days for mod to reply there but are the officials VM forums

Re: Download speeds
Apologies to everyone if I have created a red herring here.
I have now found something on VM's website and following their suggestions, doing two downloads at the same time, running a conversion of units program, etc., etc., and it reports that I am downloading at between 23 and 24 megabits per second. Considering that I have a 30 megabits per second fibre optic connection I think these download speeds are quite acceptable.
Thanks again for help offered.

Re: Download speeds
You actually have a 33mbps connection and anything below that indicates a problem. Course if you're happy with that, each to their own...

Re: Download speeds
Well, I have a 30 Mb contract but the download test shows that I get a tad over 31 Mb - certainly not 33 Mb where I live!
Apart from that, do VM actually say you will definitely get maximum downloads speeds all of the time, or even most of the time? If so, then I haven't read it.
Considering that other people share the cabling in my area, and I was downloading two large games at the same time, 23MB download speed doesn't seem so bad. When you have only ever been used to "ordinary" broadband this sort of speed is like greased lightning!

Re: Download speeds
The modem status page you posted clearly shows 33mb. Nevertheless you will never see full speed on a web-based speedtest.
In an ideal world (and even in the real world) you should be able to get the full speed of your connection when you need to use it. If you only get 24mb on a 33mb connection then something isn't right. But people being "happy enough" with that is the reason VM's broadband is going down the drain.
But again each to their own. I consider getting 72mb on my 76mb connection a fault.
