Can't possibly get 260. 255 is the maximum 300mbps wifi will do.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
I was talking about what Win 7 says on the status screen, I never see 300... It usually equals about 100-200Mbit actual data throughput.

Probably closer to 50 under practical conditions.

So even with a 500mbps, 50 is the kind of speed I can still expect?
This is kinda disappointing, I though powerline plugs would be a real solution for me but it seems as though a decent router is the only way to boost my internet speed (without wiring up the whole house).

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
While we are on the subject of wireless, any view of the best wireless adaptors out there for (a) connect to SH, (b) connect to a wireless router when SH in modem mode. I am still loking at option (a) myself as I have aphysical location issue where I would prefer not to have an addiitonal router with my SH even if that means a lower performance which is what I expect. So a case of finding out the best wireless adaptor I can find for the job

I've seen 500Mbit homeplugs max out around 236Mbit

I was talking about actual data speed, which is what I presumed everyone else was talking about in this thread.
What the Win 7 status screen says is meaningless.

Any Intel [5-6][2-3]xx range will be fine, as will just about any Atheros card.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
I opted for the power line adapter solution a few years ago. It was OK for <50Mb using an older VM Netgear router. In some parts of our largish house the adapters performed better than the 300Mb wireless signal, but even though their spec was 200Mb or 100/100 up/down they never managed more than 15Mb measured on reasonable powerful laptops of the time.
Really if you want to get anywhere close to 100Mb or 120Mb in all parts of your home your best bet is wireless or a combination of wireless and ethernet Cat 5e. I get >85Mb in a bedroom wirelessly through one ceiling from my router (WNDR3700 v1), but >100Mb via cat 5e routed up into my attic and down into the same bedroom. I have also put a wireless access point in the attic to serve other upstairs rooms where ethernet was not easy to put in. This gives >85Mb.

My 200s max out At 50. Get 500 as a minimum.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
My 200 Devolos struggle to give much over 30, the connection hovers around 90 to 115 each direction. This is with one upstairs and one down in a house just over 20 years old.
However, when Mrs Grim is on the treadmill the connection drops down to about 30 in each direction and the 'internet' speed drops down to next to nothing. Anything with cheap/no surpression will put noise in the circuit and will kill the speed.
My advice would be invest in a good quality router.
Cheers
Grim

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
Thanks for the info guys, looks like a better router is the way to go to get the best out of my 100mb connection over wireless. If anyone has any suggestions to a router capable of doing this (looking to spend as little as possible!) please leave some suggestions. I've already tried using my old dir-615 and sticking the superhub in modem mode and it's not given much better speeds.
I've even tried running the dir615 on 2.4ghz and the superhub on 5ghz simultaneously, there's no real difference wireless Internet speed between the two...

My Solwise 500Mbps (one upstairs, one downstairs) give throughput of around 70Mbps in a newish semi-detached house, which is faster then my WNDR3700 gave me, plus the speed didn't fluctuate as much as my wireless used to (which needed channel bonding to get fast speeds).
However, that's not much use to the OP who needs 100Mbps throughput. I can only think of expensive routers, so I hope dxl gets some cheap router recommendations, as I'm sure a lot of Virgin BB users would be interested in a cheap, decent N router capable of 100Mbps wireless.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
Go with TP-Link ones instead. 7dayshop have a great offer on today on a pair of 2 of them (just got their email newsletter through).
I've had two eBuyer extra value 200mbps ones and they give me around 150mb. I thought this was pretty decent considering they are on different ring mains. I should note that up until a year ago I couldn't get above 100mb, but we had a new consumer unit fitted after some building work and it shot up after that.
If you can afford it tho, go with 500mbps ones. Just avoid the gigabit ones as there has been a lot of problems with them, with many being recalled.
When people tell you they only work if your home electrics are perfect, give them a slap. Our house had its original 40+ year old electrics, with dodgy wiring everywhere and they still worked. The 200mbps ones are actually very resilient.
We've also got one of the tp-link wireless access points which basically takes the homeplug connection and makes a wireless connection from it...pretty decent idea!
The speed will greatly vary depending on your individual house. Some people get terrible speeds, some get great speeds. Your best bet is to buy them and if they dont work, send them back.

That's the sync speed not the data transfer rate which on a poor sync like that is going to be way way down on 100Mbps. They won't do 100Mbps data transfer even on their full sync.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
In my tests speeds can vary where in the house you are and what else is plugged in where.
I plugged my unit into own socket in wall and router in to that as recommended.
Then I plugged the ethernet into port on router.
Then I ran speed tests from various places using a laptop taking the other unit to different sockets around the house. Switched wireless off on laptop. Internet speeds on 50Mb service. Direct on router = 50Mb
The worst was in the study where I'd ideally like the best to be (lose long ethernet cable) where I struggled to get more than a couple of Mb.
One of the best was an outside socket. getting 40-50Mb.

Re: 200mbps Devolo powerline adapters
I've been doing a bit of digging and the Linksys e4200 keeps popping up as a good router for wireless speed. Does anyone have this particular model with a 100mb connection and able to confirm this?
