10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Just seen this post on Virgin forums from Virgin Forum Team member Dai_T :
http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...12901#U1212901

Quote:
I can confirm that speeds will be increased from 10mb to 30mb. Customers who don't have a superhub will be sent one as this will be needed to achieve over 20mbps.
Haven't seen an official announcement though.

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

VM sent me an email 14/5/2012;
Go even faster for just £20.
We can boost you even further to up to 30Mb and give you a shiny new wireless modem, for no extra monthly cost. There's just a one-off Quick Start fee of £20*. Your new modem will be the new Virgin Media Super Hub, so you could enjoy greater speeds and our fastest-ever wireless connection. Shortly after you’ve activated, we'll give you your extra boost up to 30Mb.

JPAC,
Did this involve a new contract (if so, 12 or 18 months)?

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Yes it did,

*Virgin Media Super Hub offer: New 12 month minimum term contract applies. Standard quick start or installation fees starting from £20 apply. Super Hub remains the property of Virgin Media.

I don't like the way they say 'starting from £20' either, especially when the other linked thread suggests others may get it for free.

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

if youve got an old modem call up and they will happily send out a replacement which will be a SH. if you want an early upgrade ask for it via tech support, customer service or retentions/thinking of leaving.

tell you the truth that 20£ is probably postman pats fee but again if youve got an old modem they will replace it for a SH free.

What happens if you dont have an obsolete modem? The only option is the £20 fee

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Well it's a VM 256 - max ~20Mb/s but works OK at that speed, the speed has been doubled to 20MB/s recently. I'll see what happens on this thread, I hate dealing with VM.

call up. just dont say you want the SH. busted modem or something. return your current modem within the self install box. tear back the strip properly then reseal pealing away the glue protector under the flap.

I got a letter today saying the same thing. Don't really need 30Mb and everything is nice and stable on 20Mb but if there's no extra monthly cost I don't see why not go for it. Except all the bad stuff people say about the SH. I'd only use it in modem mode though, own router/network is happily configured.

Got a nice stable connection at full speed currently, don't want to mess that up but tempted.

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Am doing the 20MB -> 30MB £20 Superhub upgrade for my Mum when her Superhub arrives. As I see it she can get rid of her modem, sell her current router and replace both of them with one device, while getting a small speed boost in the process.

Only one computer (hers) is connected by wireless and I reckon the Superhub will be able to handle this configuration with ease (fingers crossed).

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Wireless is supposedly the weak point of SuperHub.
Hopefully the software upgrade R35, due soon, will improve things.

Re: 10Mb to 30Mb rumouring

Yep, hopefully. In my own experience, wireless on the Superhub has been reliable & stable, even with 3-4 devices connected. I'm quite happy with mine. It's the speed that's lacking and I hope this problem can be addressed with the new firmware. For my mum the weak wireless won't be a problem (I hope) as the computer will be in the adjacent room to the Superhub.
