Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

I've had the shub for about 2 weeks now and have noticed over hte last week that the blue light (top one) is constantly flashing even when the pc or anything else connected is turned off. Is this normal.

Also if I wanted to use modem mode which ethernet port should I connect to on the shub and can anyone recomend a decent cheap router to use with it as the only things connecting wirelessly are my wifes phone, the wii and a netbook. The last 2 are rarely used and I don't really use the wii online much.

Cheers.

Re: Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

have you got a ping monitor setup? down/up torrents? anything that will be looking for your IP?

modem mode > the port nearest to where the white cable goes into the SH. note the IP to access the SH changes in modem mode, 192.168.100.1

d link 615. tenna on ebay.

Re: Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

Yeah - it's receiving stuff all the time for everyone else on your bonding group (filtering trough only what's keyed to you).

Also the TTB ping if you've got that running sends stuff every second.

Re: Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

Not running a ping monitor. Might have a look for the Dlink router although I think a mate of mine got one free from virgin a while back and I don't think he is using it so might see if he wants to donate it to me.

The flashing doesn't bother me as the shub is begind my monitor and the pc is in the livingroom.

can you explain this a little for me? does it mean that any device in my home will cause it to flash constantly because if it does the wii and netbook are currently turned off and my wife has her phone at work with her.

Cheers.

Re: Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

As I understand it, a cable network sends the same information to everyone connected to the same cable, and thats basically everyone in the street, on the same side of the street as you.

Your modem recieves its own, and everyone elses cable signals, and simply ignores whats not intended for you. However that means that the modem is constantly recieving data, even when nothing is plugged into the LAN side of it.

Back in the old days, it used to be possible to put a network card into promiscuous mode, and "listen in", and see all kinds of stuff like "arp who-has xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx tell yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy" and other peopes web traffic because of this. No longer possible.

It means your Virgin Media connection is shared with several hundred other people. Your connection carries data for all those people at the same time, your modem simply ignores everything that isn't addressed to you.

Actually it's closer to a dozen streets. A single node can serve several thousand homes, even tens of thousands in extreme cases. A single bonding group will serve several hundred different users, potentially close to one thousand.

However, in no case should background activity on the DOCSIS network or data intended for other users ever cause any lights on your Superhub to flash.

Quite often the blue light on my superhub doesnt flash for ages when all my computers are off. So does this mean I have my own bonding group?

Seems to be very low activity here unless I'm actually using the connection myself!

Re: Blue light constantly flashing even when the pc is off

There is no data transfer when the SH is idle except for the usual few bytes up and down every minute or so. My SH only blinked once every minute originally then my upload was capped at 2.7 and the blue LED has been constantly flashing ever since.
(except for now when I lost connection)

Like I said, data for other people is ignored by your Superhub, it will not cause yours to flash.

However mine doesnt flash and the OP's does flash when ALL of his equipment is off.

What is the cause of this difference? Something online must be pinging his connection purhapes?

Cheers
