Canceling contract due to price increase.

If a user cancels contract due to the price increase do they have to give 30 days notice?

Yes standard cancellation terms still apply.

I take it that the 30 days notice will be free since I had to pay a month in advance when my contract started.

No, it wouldn't be.

Your first bill is higher because it's sent out after your services are installed, so the bill covers services you've already used along with the usual advance period.

However by the time the bill is due to be paid you are mostly through the billing period covered by any bill.

So although you may get a refund depending on the billing period your final bills cover compared to when your disconnected, it's not related to any payments on your first bill

Angry Re: Canceling contract due to price increase.

Can I ask if you are cancelling because of the most recently announced increases?

As soon as I received the sugary email telling me that my Broadband speed was going to be doubled from 10 to 20mbs (something I didn't request and am not bothered about) I've been waiting to be notified of the cost of this "Free upgrade". As sure as night follows day, it came today: an extra £1.50 per month + increases in the cost of phone calls. The same stunt Virgin pulled when upgrading me from 2 to 10mbs.

Come the end of my present contract in May, I shall be looking for alternative provider. From experience it would seem they're all out to screw us if we don't stay on our toes and keep switching. Loyalty means nothing to any of them!

We had phone and bb on separate accounts but merged them and I had to pay the current bill plus a month in advance something like £54, so the way I see it is I'm paying a month in advance so cancelling with 30 days notice means I've already paid for that notice period, otherwise if they bill me after 30 days notice then I'm paying 2 months in advance. Are you saying if I cancel I will pay £54 again?

Re: Canceling contract due to price increase.

Go through your billing history online if you can, I remember when I joined VM within 3 weeks I had some crazy bill for around £100.

When I rang in they said it was a part month service plus a month in advance. Yet when you try to leave they seem to forget about the month in advance.

But yet when you're a customer and ask them "Oh so in February I'm actually paying March bill" they say yeah, then you leave in May thinking the April bill covered it but NOOOOOOOOO, You're with them for 12 months but they want 13 and a half months payments.

Just add up your total monthly bills, then add up the amount you've paid them and see how the figures look for the total time you've had services.

Virgin would only want 13 month's payments if you give your 30 days notice at the end of month 12.

If you really really want to end your contract exactly 12 months after you started it, then you need to give your notice in month 11

It all depends when you give the notice

If you have just had a bill for the services up to say the 30th of March, and you give your notice on the 1st of March, then that bill would be your final services bill as the 30 days notice takes you up to the 30th which you've just been billed for - although you may still have phone calls/PPV payments to pay for between the last bill and the disconnection.

However if you gave your notice on the 15th of March, then your would still owe two weeks of service - as your 30 days notice would take you up to the 15th(ish) of April

However what does happen is that the billing system continues to generate bills as normal until the disconnection is completed because you can (and people do) cancel their disconnection

So sometimes you may get a bill for a full month after disconnection, which will then either be corrected by an amended bill if one can be generated before the Direct Debit payment has been run, or by an automatic refund (excluding any usage) if there has been an overpayment

Re: Canceling contract due to price increase.

If under the contract it's possible to just cancel the service that has been increased in price, in my case how do I know from this Virgin communication: "What's changing for you.
The cost of your bundle charges will increase by £1.50 a month."
whether that refers to my phone-line rental or Broadband?

The Price rise has nothing to do with the free speed doubling and would have happened anyway as it does every year.

So true - but very bad timing / PR people will link the two together.

Re: Canceling contract due to price increase.

I was only asking to see if I could get out a bit quicker, my services with Virginmedia end early March so I will have to make another payment.

By the way I haven't canceled due to performance issues, just an offer that Sky described in a letter as "Your fairytale offer has arrived" an it really is a great offer. So unfortunately the £35 a month that's about to become £37 VM BB had to go. Its simply financial.
