Can I get faster on DOCSIS 1.1?

Hi all,

I was having terrible trouble with my 50mb service due to over utilisation on the DOCSIS 3 network, so the people at retentions said I could switch back to my old Ambit 256 modem and use the legacy (DOCSIS 1.1) network.

It's been going well, getting full 10mb down and 1mb up. However, is there any way I can have faster broadband and keep the Ambit modem/DOCSIS 1.1? Could I have, say 20 or 30mb?

PS: Are my power levels ok? I'm using a -15dB forward path attenuator...

Cable Modem Downstream
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 1
Downstream Frequency : 330750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -1.0 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 39.1 dB

Cable Modem Upstream
Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 4
Upstream Frequency : 22200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 31.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Thanks,

Gareth

It seems the tables have turned, I think so many bottom tier customers have been moved to docsis3 that now the old network has more capacity on it.

Re: Can I get faster on DOCSIS 1.1?

20mb is the top tier currently running on the DOCSIS 1.x segment but not all 20mb users will be on DOCSIS 1, some are on DOCSIS 3 - I'm not sure if there's a way to guarantee being put on one over the other. Anything above 20mb (e.g. 30, 50) are as far as VM are concerned DOCSIS-3 only, even if DOCSIS 1 is theoretically capable of it, it'd be a really bad idea.

Re: Can I get faster on DOCSIS 1.1?

i would give it 2-3 years everyone will be on docsis 3 inclkuding small broadband which is now 5mb, but to the op i dnt think you will say on docsis 1 i am pretty sure it allocae you a docsis file pointing to the docsis 3 network if you wan thet faster speeds you will need ot bit the bullet or wait for hte doubling

Re: Can I get faster on DOCSIS 1.1?

well, I spoke to retentions (again) and a very nice lady has now changed me onto the 20mb service (which isn't even supposed to be available in my area) and kept me on the Ambit (DOCSIS 1.1) modem, and for not much more money.

I'm happier now, maybe I won't go with O2 Broadband after all

Is there any way of telling whether the upgrade has moved me onto the overlay network or not?

Cable Modem Downstream
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 1
Downstream Frequency : 330750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.6 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 38.9 dB

Cable Modem Upstream
Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 3
Upstream Frequency : 40800000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 33.0 dBmV

I notice that since doing the upgrade, the upstream modulation has changed from "QAM16" to "QPSK", is this relevant?

Gareth

Re: Can I get faster on DOCSIS 1.1?

From memory QPSK is used on the upstream because it can tolerate more noise.

Search Ingnis posts because he has written some very good explanations of it.

20Mb is no longer a tier that is sold as it was replaced by 30mb but the OP will be upgraded to 20Mb sometime over the next 18 months, no it does not make sense but that is how it works.
