The other man's grass is not greener.

Speaking too a guy in the sauna the other day about broadband suppliers, with me gloating about my 100Mb, he announced that he was leaving Openreach because of unreliable connections and dodgy customer service.

One particular anecdote sticks in my mind. He had rung CS with a fault. They gave him an engineer slot. 30 minutes before the engineer arrived the fault cleared. The engineer arrived and announced, after a few minutes, that there was no fault. A charge was made for an unnecessary call out. Lo and behold another guy in the sauna said that had happened to him and a mate at work.

The general grumbles about BT and Openreach suggested a very unhappy set of customers. We see a lot of moans here, but have we really got an alternative? I wouldn't mind their low pings and line quality though.

I had a look at the Openreach FTTC rollout programme just to see if I could have the pleasure of turning them down. The Cheylesmore exchange isn't on their plans, I guess because our area is taken up by VM already.

Re: The other man's grass is not greener.

I had 5 Openreach callouts where they didn't find and didn't fix the fault on my ADSL line and there was no charge. This was the reason I chanced cable in the first place despite the many horror stories I'd seen.

Now I'm part of a VM horror story myself and was pleased to see that according to that site I may be able to get Infinity next June which is 6 months sooner than the last rollout list I saw. I hoping that the FTTC will bypass the dodgy line segment which caused me dump ADSL.

Re: The other man's grass is not greener.

I now have some mental images I really didn't want.

Personally my VM 10Mb account is generally stable, and as long as the server at the other end can do it I get full speed.

At work there is a BT ADSL line; it has a tendency to go down often. We have rung BT and they have checked the line and said there isn't a problem - even when the line was down.

They did something at the exchange - moved the line to another bit of equipment - but still problems. Next year the company is investing in a leased line.

On the other hand my Mum's (dare I mention the name) TalkTalk connection is generally steady.

Well you aren't going to be turning Openreach down, they don't provide services to end users.
