Re: New upload speeds and Network Management

Same here in New Malden - which though fed from Croydon new Malden has a ready date of March for the upload uplift.

On ATDMA and 20480 Kb/s raw bitrate now, but no config file changes have come through yet.

What I still note is that there is still upstream congestion. I assume that since we're on ATDMA and 20480 that the overall bandwidth upstream that is available is now 20480 not the previous 10240. However speedtest still maxes out at around 1.5 to 2 Mb/s not closer to the 3.49 Mb/s my config file has (I am on the 50 Mb/s business service which explains the weird interim upstream.

I also never acheive more than 47 to 48 Mb/s downstream, yet the config file for downstream is set to 54.6 Mb/s I'd have expected a little more. This is via a hardwired connection.

Could this be a CMTS config issue? Could this explain why upstream doesn't achieve over 3 Mb/s?

Ooooh now that sounds promising !

Re: New upload speeds and Network Management

correct me if I'm wrong but isn't 54600000bps equal to 52.07Mbps?

Equally 3490000bps = 3.32Mbps

well 54600000bps is equal to 54.6mbit

Re: New upload speeds and Network Management

No, bit. Not byte.

VM's top tariff isn't even close to 3 mibibyte. That would be 28 megabits per second. More than the entire channel's total upload capacity.

Now you are getting all serious and correct. I assumed you were jesting.

Re: New upload speeds and Network Management

To bring this back to the question... does anyone think this could be a CMTS config issue? I know there have been reports in the past of a mis configuration that has caused small speed reductions. I am not at all unhappy with the service, just puzzled as to why it maxes out at 47/48 Mb/s and not just over given the profile. I have seen plenty of people post reports of just over 50 Mb/s

Re: New upload speeds and Network Management

Possibly. Don't forget VM throttle your speed at both ends - your modem limits the speed dependant on it's config file, but the CMTS does the same thing based on it's configuration, so that people with "hacked modems" don't get more than thier provisioned speeds. Quite what the CMTS config says I don't know.

google says that 1kilobit is equal to 1024bits. I thought when people talk about bits and bytes they usually don't bother with the binary prefixes even though it was accepted that that was how it worked.
sorry for the tangent.

Feb 12 referred to the month and year, not month and day...
