Problem Accessing the Virtual Server on Virgin Broadband

Hi All
This is the first online forum i have joined and i am really looking for some help from the clever people.
The problem is :
I have a virgin cable broadband at home. they have provided a cisco cable modem and a netgear wireless router.
I have a virtual server ( located on internet) which is mapped as "P" Drive on my computer(s). i can connect and access this drive when i am at work ( in BT network) and also if i use my vodafone dongle but cannot connect to it when i am using my virgin broadband.
I might sound a complete idiot but is there anything in virgin router or modem ( a port or something)which can stop me from accesssing the network drive. I have a website hosted on the same server which is accesible from virgin media so i presume only the network drive or a direct access is blocked. Just to make it more clear i can RDP to the same server from virgin media.
It is driving me crazy as i have contacted the virgin media guys a they have a standard reply " they have not blocked anything".
I would really appreciate any help!
Regards
Arun

Re: Problem Accessing the Virtual Server on Virgin Broadband

maybe you need to forward a port on your router?

Re: Problem Accessing the Virtual Server on Virgin Broadband

This is a port blocking issue on Virgin's part, ports 137-139(which are known as the SMB ports) are blocked to prevent the spread virus's. File sharing(and consequently mapped drives) need these ports open to work.

These restictions can't be lifted, so your only choice really is to "tunnel" the connection over a VPN, which is really something you'd need to contact the hosting company about, as it would need something listening on thier end for you to connect to.

Re: Problem Accessing the Virtual Server on Virgin Broadband

Thanks Jon
i think you are absolutely right. The only surprise is that the very first day when i configured my Mapped drive, i did it from home from the same network. afterwards it stopped working so they might have blocked it later.....
Its a shared virtual server and i dont think these companies provide anything like vPN tunnels. so i think i am stuck with thes guys! BT was much better..
