Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
hiya i am in my 4 month of a supposed 18-month contract with Talktalk in which i took their broadband+phone bundle.
basically i have been unhappy with them especially the bb speeds in which i cannot get 5MB as i was 3kms away from the xchange. i have heard of those reasons for endless times but it seems that TT has been disregarding their customers and seems to be doing nothing even if i complain or call their customer services, etc.
i would like to know what makes Virgin Media different with TT? if the BT exchange (that is Vauxhall) is the same and the physical line itself is the same what reasurances i will get from VM considering i heard that you guys have the highest "average speeds" in the UK even higher than TT, BT and Sky.
what makes you better than TT et al and reasons why i would move to you?

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
If it's ADSL then the speed limits will probably be the same as what you have now especially that far away from the exchange, if it's cable then you're likely to get close to the advertised speed (10, 20 or 50Mb) it only tends to be in major city centre or student areas where cable tends to drop at peak times..
PS..Welcome to the forum

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
TT has many "unbundled" exchanges and i beleive one of them is near me which is Vauxhall.
so what you are saying that even though Virgin will be using the same physical lines and cables to my flat they can give me better "average speeds" than TT?
how can you prove and reassure this to me...?

No, what I said is that if VM use ADSL then you'll probably get the same speed or a bit slower than TT, hence I said "if it's cable" in relation to getting a faster line speed

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
Virgin has told me that fibre optic is NOT available on my postcode but they can still offer me "up to 10MB" bb speeds with actual/average speeds apparently reaching "at least 7-8MB". i am just wondering how and why did they said that? are they using some kind of special hardware or equipment or unbundling technique different from TT's?

They are using the technique of lying to you - they are describing the 'fibre optic' cable product with that average / actual speed. In actual fact Virgin's ADSL product is the lowest rated ADSL product in the country and you're probably better off staying where you are.

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
as far as i know TT is using this ADSL+ bb. so, it's the same as Virgin's ADSL? and why would Virgin "lie" to me?

The person you were speaking to was either:
A) Clueless so gave you the cable / fibre optic spiel not knowing any better or
B) On commission so gets paid to make the sale.
TT and VM do indeed use the same type of ADSL - you will get nothing extra from signing up with Virgin.

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
Really ignitionnet...? is that from someone who had a bad experience with VM? or from reliable sources?
so IYHO TT is still quite better than VM in terms of overall reliability and customer services?
why would VM lie to people? that's illegal and immoral isn't it?

As I doubt whether ignitionnet will justify his comments by giving you sight of his CV may I say that there are many members who will vouch for him and the information he gives. If you wish to challenge his comments it would be best to do your research in depth.

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
i am not challenging or doubting anyone. i am merely someone who is inquiring about VM and it's services if they indeed say who they are i.e. "better" and leading the way in bb speeds.
the way i see TT is tied-up and at the mercy of BT as they have "unbundled" those exchanges.
whereas with VM i see them them as an independent entity not tied up with BT and so far have been investing loads on it's network.

If as stated previously cable is not available in your area then VM WILL be tied up to BT as they will be using their unbundled lines to supply the ADSL connection in exactly the same way as TT.

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
so, even if i think my TT bb speeds are slow (and "crap") then it is still better to stick with them? i hve virtually given up on TT a long time ago and i am merely giving them a chance to prove themselves wrong and sort out my problem.
as of today, there is no great deal of change from my bb speed. it is still a constant 2-4MB; i have tried everything from unplugging/turning off my router and filters to doing these tests (speed tests, network tests, tracert tests, etc.) but still nothing.
what also frustrates me is the fact that i don't get any news, updates or feedback whatsoever from TT on what are they doing, what have they found out or what are their plans for my line or my exchange.
i mean...i am near insane here.

Re: Question from someone who wants to move to Virgin
Unfortunately there is nothinng anyone can do for you. The problem is down to the distance you are from the exchange.
