Modem/speed issues

Hi, i recently upgraded from the standard 10meg with virgin to the 20meg.

They sent me a new router, (Dir-615) which works fine afaik, (i've only used G adapters so far, not checked with N adapters, as i don't have any yet).

My problem is that when wired to either my router or my modem, i can only get 4-6meg from running speed tests, and no better from downloading things, although i haven't tried anything particularly big. My upload speed is around the 700kb mark.

Something that i've noticed is that there's a connector tip inside the modem that seems to be broken or at least astray and so if i move the ethernet cable that's in the modem about then the modem can lose its connection to the router.

Things that i have tried/ensured:

Using ethernet cables to connect router to pc and router to modem.
Modem -> PC connection results in the same speed as Modem -> Router -> PC
Turned both router & modem off (for 2mins at a time) and on again several times.
Used TCP Optimiser
Enabled 1 gigabit speed on my NIC
Followed all of the instructions on various guides
I've tried testing it at different times of the day
I've barely used the internet before attempting the speedtests.

I've tried phoning them today but i just had the reply that the employees at that particular sector cant seem to operate their controls or something so they can't check my modem from wherever they are.

I would also like somebody to check my modems settings, i've read different hz are different speeds on some sites and so i'm not sure which are correct!:

NTL:Home 200

Modem Status:
Acquire Downstream Channel 331000000 Hz Locked
Connectivity State OK Operational
Boot State OK Operational
Security Enabled BPI

Downstream Status:
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Frequency : 331000000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Interleave Depth : 32
Downstream Receive Power Level : 3.5 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 26.6 dB

Upstream Status:
Upstream Channel ID : 2
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 45.0 dBmV
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream Frequency : 29200000 Hz
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Is there anything that i can do now apart from to phone them tomorrow?
Thanks

Edit: I'm using Windows XP 32bit, though i doubt that'd make a difference.

You need your modem swapped.

Re: Modem/speed issues

After phoning up twice and being put through all of the same tests, i've finally managed to get their phone operator to send me a new modem - Though one of the phone calls probably could have been avoided if my G11 keyboard supported a PS/2 adapter (and if i had one handy - to go to the Safe mode with networking)

Both operator asked me to do the same stuff, which is good i guess as one was probably seeing if the other had missed anything out, but slightly unecessary.

So i guess from here it's just connect the modem and then phone them to activate it?

Re: Modem/speed issues

Brilliant news -

with the new modem (Directly into the PC), Now to test with the router in the loop!

With the modem in the loop:

Not bad tbh, i'll happily accept that.

(Another one, 2mins after to let the connection settle):

Great, now that that's working, i can't seem to connect wirelessly now... Perhaps too much to handle for the DIR-615 now that it's actually getting the correct speed? - I've tried resetting the router and various other things but i can't seem to connect via iphone with/without encryption, with/without MAC filtering.

Re: Modem/speed issues

- On my iPhone i just get the message "Unable to join the network "D-Link N"" (D-Link N is what i've called my SSID).

Also, it sometimes almost connects, like the tick appears there to say that i'm connected but the wifi signal bar doesn't appear, it's just the circle for the accompanying phone signal's internet provider.

- I don't think that it's my iPhone that's broken, as:
1.) I can connect to a neighbors wireless router
2.) I cannot connect to my router wirelessly from my Xbox 360.

Img of current settings for my computer.
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/5...orkdetails.png

Edit - Dunno if it makes any difference, but my router's wireless is apparantly "Signal Strength -43" and "Channel 1" and "Noise: 0". (Going off of EWifi app).

EDIT AGAIN! -<

I've sort of fixed it - I changed the channel to 6 (as the other wifi signals in the area are set to 6) and i've connected fine! - However, what's this channel number about exactly, and what's the differences between each channel?

Re: Modem/speed issues

The channels are different frequencies. I'd switch to another on though as everyone in the area seems to be on the same one to avoid interference.
