50MB Only Getting 25MB

Just wondering of someone can help me.

I had 50MB installed yesterday after problem with the modem locking on the the network, the engineer then started to test the speed of the net and th most he could get was 25MB or just under, he then went to the cab to check everythink he said we are already on top bank (witch i knew) as i am a good 400m from the cab.

He then phoned someone from networks and they said try a setting on the pc to do with network ie it was auto dupex as defualt he try other setting still cannot get above 25MB so he then rang networks again and he said that networks would check the cab today.

So here i am and my speeds are even worst then when i was on 20MB.

Also after the upgrade the vstuff is still saying 10gig limit even tho it should be unlimited.

I am at a loss on what can be done as i have just rang up and the person over the phone just said there was a problem just it has been sorted now.

some how i don't see it being sorted.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

Can we see your modem stats and event log as per other othreads? And tell us your location. Also, please do a PATHPING www.bbc.co.uk and paste the results here. Pathping takes a few minutes and appears to hang but doesn't; it finishes OK always.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

The engineer said that to the network guy on the phone.

Also i am on the top bank in cab as it is so i think that is why he phoned the network guy as he could not get it above 25MB.

I am just wondering what networks can do as i said above i am on top bank

The Pathping suggests that there is no congestion - at least not when you did the test.

Your downstream levels are not good. For sure, your downstream is attenuated somewhere (all coax joints are tight?) as it's out of spec for 256QAM.

Your downstream RxMER/SNR is only just on bounds if you consider a 6dB margin above minimum to be best.

The codewords and the T3 timeouts are probably due to the install process. You'd need to clear the event log and do some systematic tests along the following lines:

1 Take your modem stats again including the event log.

2 Immediately after the stats download a large file from http://www.virginmedia.com/testmyspeed/manual.php and note the speed (in MBytes/second) and the file size downloaded in MBytes.

3 Immediately after the download take the stats again and the event log.

Publish the results on the forum, removing your CM MAC address where it appears.

This will enable us to calculate the codeword corruption as a % of received data. This evidence could be important for the 2nd line support people to take note.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

There is only 2 spliters in the house and he changed them and he even removed them and and just had the modem with tv disconnected he was still getting them downstreams.

See the problem is that i am a good 5mins walk from the Cab i am the last house on that cab before it goes the one around the corner.

Infact for the past 6 months if not longer the online light on the V+ and standard set-top box flashes at least twice aweek and when it does work the on-demand is always picture and sound drop-outs.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

Check all your coax connections into the modem. If they're tight, then the techs need to adjust the power levels at the cabinet.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

There all tight.

As said on a few post back the teac went to the cab and he said we are already on top bank with me being the furthest away from the cab (witch i could have told him ) he then phoned a guy from networks to see if there was any problems in the area and he said nope there was not.

To be honest the tech had to send his other 3 jobs to another tech as he got to me at 13.20 and left at 15.10 then returned to check somethink else and left at 16.30.

he had tried everythink to get the speeds up.

Also it has taken him a good 45mins for the modem to lock on to the network that when he said somethink is wrong as it not take long then a few secs/mins.

Being on "the top bank" will only make some of the difference. What he needs to do somehow is turn the wick up on the power delivery to stop it dropping so low.

Is there really no cabinet nearer to your property? That's a long way for coax to travel. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if it needs a re-pull.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

There is a cab around the corner tho when they laid the ducting back in the early 90's it turns the other way so they would have to dig the whore street up for me to get on that cab.

As for the power the tech said he can't get me any highier as i was the highest it could go also i am best grade they got as i had a repull about 2 years ago when i got the VIP package as before that if to say i went on to the ondemand stuff i could then not get on the net as it was so laggy. so they did a repull to best they had they was there for best part of 3 hours with the strech as there is least 5-6 access point befor it get to the cab.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

From your pathping, I believe you're in an ex-Telewest area which means you have a private run to the street cab. This is also confirmed by the engineer telling you you're on the top block in the frame (lowest attenuation). I don't know enough about ex-telewest but I think that means there are no amplifiers in the street between you and the cabinet.

If there's a cabinet round the corner, nearer, VM prolly have the wayleave to dig the road/pavement up and connect you in if there is a spare port on the frame.

Otherwise I reckon they're gonna have to do some nifty work to raise the RxMER by 3 dB at least.

You can forget about the further tests I suggested.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

Yeah sorry i am ex-telewest.

Some strange reason i can't see them dig up the street as the box around the corner there just under half of what it is now, yes it is closer tho would involve digging my street up then the street around the corner.

Re: 50MB Only Getting 25MB

Thing is - I can't see what they can do with your existing cable to the street cab. One could imagine pulling a "better" quiality cable with lower loss, but chances are you've got good enough cable anyway. A test with special eqquipment would quickly determine your chances there.

One could also imagine some sort of amplification at the street cab - if it has power; although that isn't best practice since amplification should be further down the line.

You do need to put VM on the spot to determine your case fairly.

Are you a long way from your BT exchange? You can see what I'm thinking in case VM don't want to sort this out.
