Smile Question regarding Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N USB Adapter

Hey folks

Another question, when I upgraded to 50mbit, they gave me a new router (Netgear WNR2000), a new cable modem (the flash black thingy with the blue lights), and they also gave me this Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N USB Adapter.

Bear with me on this, I've been on the net since 1997/8, yet I've never had to use one of these adapters, so I have some questions.

Is the purpose of this adapter to boost the signal between the device and the router? For example, if I plugged this into a laptop I have downstairs, the signal from the adapter will be much stronger to the router upstairs? Much better than the standard Wifi signal that comes with Laptops?

Sorry if I appear a bit thick, this Wireless malarky is a whole different kettle of fish for me! I'm borrowing my Dad's laptop to do some work on instead of having to sit at the PC to do it.

Cheers

Re: Question regarding Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N USB Adapter

Well firstly does your laptop have wireless already built in?

If so, you can use that but unless it's Wireless N you aren't going to get anywhere near 50Mbps.

That's where the adapter comes in, because it is rated N it will be faster, have greater coverage and you should achieve near 50Mbps.

Hope that makes sense, if your laptop's wireless is G standard you are unlikely to achieve more than 24Mbps.
