Just installed 50Mb BB - Slow
Hi All,
Newbie here!
I recently got VM's 50Mb service, it was installed last Thursday while I was away. The installer told wife he had managed to get 15Mb only, and he would report this back to base. I got home last Friday, never managed to get more than 8 MB all last weekend. Just got home today (I work away during the week), and I'm still only getting between 5.5Mb & 8.0Mb.
All the kit is brand new, so I'm stumped as to where to look.
Any advice would be greatly received
p.s. The wireless router was left in the box by the installer, as he told the wife I would have to be there to sort 'password', and he said I would have to sort this myself!

Re: Just installed 50Mb BB - Slow
Firstly the installer should be trained to install and config the wireless router, secondly you need call tech support as there is a major issue when your getting sub 10Mb speeds on your 50Mb service.
Can you please post your modem config pages which is here 192.168.100.1, we need to see the upstream and downstream power levels.
Also welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the response BBK.
I have been in touch with VM following my initial post, (expected India got a very amiable scouser) and he said there was a problem with the modem (power, I think he said). Anyway he has arranged for an engineer to call out next Saturday morning. I'll let you know how I get on.
The readings you requested are below (I think)

Re: Just installed 50Mb BB - Slow
Cheers Chris,
Tech arranged for next Saturday.
Not bad eh?
2 weeks I'll have been on 50mb, and I'm getting slower speed than when I was on the 10mb!

Update:
'Tech' (I use the term loosely)came out today. Tried tests via my PC, couldn't understand why my speed was so low!
Plugged his laptop in, and ran tests, says he is getting 46-48mb on his pc, when I asked why I could only get 7-8 mb on both my PC & laptop (both wired direct one at a time), responded by saying he did not know a lot about computers, and left.
So this is the 3rd week since install, and i'm still getting a slower service than before I upgraded.
Anyone got any ideas where I go now?
Ps Pc using Vista Home Premium, Laptop using XP.

Are u using Ethernet for ur connections also? Did he lower ur downstream power levels also?

Yes Chris, I was using ethernet on both PC & Laptop.
He connected using ethernet also, he didn't sat anything about lowering downstream power levels, so I assume he didn't. He was only here 15mins.
P.S. After midnight last night, my speed went up to the full 50mb, got up this morning, wouldn't connect at all, waited for a while re=booted modem and router, now I'm back to 8mb. So that points to the fact that there is no probs with my PC (or does it?)

Re: Just installed 50Mb BB - Slow
Update:
Thanks to all for help.
Got a second engineer out on Monday morning after contacting CS again. Good guy! Tried a few things, managed to get a good speed on his laptop. Still no joy with my desktop, he went to the box at the end of my street, came back 10mins later, and said there was a problem at the box, and that the network lads were on there way. True to there word, 2 lads turned up and spent about 45mins trying different checks, again there PC was reading OK, it was mine that was cr*p.
5 mins after they left, in despair I went to the 'configure' set up on my LAN connection, clicked on 'advanced', noticed my 'Link Speed & Duplex' was set at 10Mbps/Half Duplex, changed this to 100Mbsp/Half Duplex (No, I don't know what this means either, but it was the only setting that mentioned speed). Immediately began getting Full Speed (50Mb+)
Footnote: Still getting less than 5Mb/s wirelessly on my XP laptop, but I can live with that.
Once again thanks to all for there advice.
Kev
