Changing IP Address on Virgin
Hi guys,
For the past 6 months I have been changing my IP address twice daily without problems. My method for achieving this would be to log into the control panel for the DLink router, assign a random MAC address, and then reboot both the router and the modem. After doing this, I would get a new IP.
However, something strange has happened today. When I do the above process, after rebooting the router and modem, the "Internet Connection" light on the router turns amber, and nothing works. The only way to restore internet on the computer and remove the amber light from the router is to reset the MAC address to the default one. Everything then works ok, but of course I don't have a new IP!
I have been fiddling for just short of 7 hours, and have had no joy today! I was wondering, could it be a bug externally.
Any ideas or help would be more than appreciated. I'm tearing my hair out here!
Thanks.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
There is no guarantee that you can change you IP address at will. Virgin use long lease IP addresses.
Also the modem does record what MAC addresses are connected to it and I'm pretty sure there is a daily limit to how many times you can connect different equipment in a given time period - which is what the modem thinks you are doing
Why do you need to change your IP address so often?

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
There's a limit to how many times you can do that, up until now you've been lucky in being able to do it twice, you've now reached your limit.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
You are allowed 4 MAC addresses on the host table at any one time and if you exceed this then this will happen.
If you still cannot get online you need to call Tech Support who will get 2nd line to clear it for you.
Try using the proxy settings instead of changing your IP address.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
Thanks Moldova. Can you explain how I can achieve this using proxy settings? Also, how long will it take for the MAC's to clear automatically?
Cheers!

How to set a Virginmedia proxy.
Give it a try.
It can take up to 24 hours to clear.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
.... or use a VPN service, if you don't mind stumping up some extra cash.
The proxy method doesn't offer any real 'stealth', no encryption etc., if that's what you're after, and they'll invariably slow your connection (don't know about the Virgin proxy - haven't used it).
Mind you, constantly changing your IP won't mask your activities either.
It's all logged, just the same.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
I'm not trying to mask my activity. All I wanted to do is change the IP (in relation to some software we are developing). Thanks for your advice, but I've solved the problem now.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
you can change your IP address.
change your NIC MAC and then ipconfig /release and renew when connected to the modem directly.
this will give your modem a new IP address.

Re: Changing IP Address on Virgin
That is what the OP was already doing - changing his router MAC to force a new IP
But there is no guarantee that will work and as has already been discussed if you change it too many times you will get disconnected for exceeding the number of different MACs connected in a period of time

No it doesn't have to work. The frequency of IP address changes can be limited. Think of it this way, suppose I decided to spoof my router's MAC address every five minutes and get a new IP. How long would it take me to use up the entire set of DHCP leases?
