based on the current information in the public domain regarding CView, no
currently VM will not confirm of deny that CView is active (having said they will not inform people the system is operating), and even if it is active, it is ment only to be a reporting tool (you can be synical like myself regarding mission creep etc but we have done that already on this thread)

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
According to this - CView is active on VM. Has this journalist/blogger got their facts mixed up?

Any comments anyone?

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
To clarify CView has not been deployed on the customer network.
However all that blog says it has been in trial with VM, which doesn't at all mean it's been deployed. VM could have tested it on a closed and seperate network

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
VM have also said it will announce when it is been used but will not inform user's of which part of network it is been used on, as this will cause false results.

The only way you can get a formal clarification is via the Virgin Media press office

BenMcr may be a member of staff for Virgin, but I doubt he's in a position where he could formally clarify something like that. Even assuming he was in a position to know whether they are are not, he would likely have some sort of clause in his contract forbidding him from discussing that sort of thing publically.
If we get formal clarification from Virgin as to whether this is live on the customer network or not, you can bet we will be publishing it on the news pages.

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
From the article...
Quote:
|
The proportion of customers abusing music content from file-sharing networks is tiny in relation to the customer base as a whole but the average honest consumer would inevitably end up paying for all of this in higher subscription fees.
|
...and if the fees increase you can bet your bottom dollar that the volume of file sharing will also increase - if you're paying for it you may as well use it. I read somewhere the other day that file sharing in Spain skyrocketed for this very reason.

Aah - thank you StuartC . I'll assume that the question of whether CView is in use by VM is still an open one then, if that denial from Ben McRae was not official enough. Thank you for the formal Cableforum clarification that the VM staff clarification was not really officially formal. Although as your clarification was not in bold, I suppose it wasn't really a formal Cableforum clarification. If you see what I mean. ;-) - this is beginning to sound like "Yes, Minister".

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
Looks like CView may be on indefinite hold and that the objections on legal, privacy and human rights grounds are being given more careful consideration. http://www.slightlyrightofcentre.com...copyright.html

Re: VM to monitor File Sharing
Perhaps someone asked if it was still "on hold", as announced two months ago.
