Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

Hi all
I rent a property in South Manchester and the landlord provides the internet. I think its the M package which I believe was 2mb and should be 10mb but I'm not sure this is the case. My technical understanding of the numbers is minimal so if I paste the relevant pages from my modem config could someone please help? Thanks

Speedtest results (believe the connection is being throttled - too much?)

Sat, 21 Nov 2009 17:49:53 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 10273 ms = 99.7 KB/sec, approx 822 Kbps, 0.8 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 10028 ms = 102.1 KB/sec, approx 841 Kbps, 0.82 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 15600 ms = 65.6 KB/sec, approx 541 Kbps, 0.53 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 25100 ms = 81.6 KB/sec, approx 672 Kbps, 0.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 719 Kbps, 0.7 Mbps

If you were being traffic managed then the download figures would be 2Mb and not 0.8Mb

Living in Manchester you'll probably find it's over subscription or a fault (I'm sure that someone will look at your figures and advice correctly very shortly)

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

Thanks

I've ran the speedtest again and got different results:

Test 1: 1024K took 5810 ms = 176.2 KB/sec, approx 1452 Kbps, 1.42 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 5467 ms = 187.3 KB/sec, approx 1543 Kbps, 1.51 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 5250 ms = 195 KB/sec, approx 1607 Kbps, 1.57 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 18771 ms = 109.1 KB/sec, approx 899 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1375 Kbps, 1.35 Mbps

Is it due to over subscription?

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

We don't know for sure - but Manchester is well known in this forum for contention problems. I'm not sure it's been narrowed down to South Manchester.

The proof will be found if you take measurements at say 09:00 Sunday, and possibly throughout the morning. All the students are at Church then!

Let us know.

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

Check this link out if you downloaded the amounts specified during the time periods shown you will have your speed cut to the limits listed.

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php

But it is more likely to be a problem elsewhere as your speeds are to low as stated by the others above so you will need to call Tech Support is open 24/7 on 151 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Sephiroth, you're dead on. I get perfect performance in the daytime, its just peak-time evenings and weekends that suck. Moldova, thanks for the info - I'm aware of the limits/caps, but a speed of average 0.7 Mbps earlier today is slower than it should be. I'm not the account holder - will need to find out who's name its in. Thanks

You do not have to be the account holder to report a fault.

You don't have a fault. But you could ask the question what plans VM have to reduce contention in your area. It'll take a lot of pressing on them to get any sense out of them but someone somewhere in the organisation knows and so it's worth asking.

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

Thanks guys I'll have to get on it. Having some regrets signing up for a TV over IP service that expects at least a 1.8 Mmbps connection... Naively assumed VM would manage this with the 10meg service, even when throttled. Whoops

Tell us more please. You slipped that one in.

You have to search very hard (IPTV) on the VM web site to find out more than the merest mention. There's no price plan on the web site so we don't know how it compares with cable TV.

So, what's in the service? What are the options? How much does it cost? What are the service guarantees in the contract? Where is the dtuff on this to be found?

And, do you have VM's cable TV?

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

It's not a VM provided IPTV service which will explain the lack of mention of it on VM's site.

Re: Am I on 10mb? Am I being throttled too much?

It's Sky Player on Xbox 360. High quality needs a consistent 1.8mb connection. On demand stuff is at 1.4mb (I think), but due to the way it buffers it will usually play smoothly even when the network is busy. Live TV at peaktime is a nightmare though
